to get back at Memphis. he is becoming a free agent this year right? we would have enough if we dont resign frye. i think gay might take less money to be on a winner. he is sick of losing

Memphis has a qualifying offer on him. Whatever we'd offer him, they'd just match it and keep him.

Doesn't Gay become a free agent in 2010 like LMA and Roy?

he's on rookie scale until 2010/2011 when he becomes a restricted FA and even then memphis can match any offer, and they are almost certain to sign him to a long-term extension this fall anyway.

never heard him say that, but if he was a jerk about it and demanded out of memphis there would be a trade bidding war for him and it would take one of the big 3 (or rudy + bayless + multiple #1 picks etc.) to compete with what other teams would offer.

i personally wouldn't sign him anyway even if he were a FA. it would take a near-max deal (+killer luxury tax starting in 2011) and IMO he would not be worth that to us given that we don't really need a lot of offense from starting 3. long-term a defensive-minded occasional spot up shooter like batum is becoming will be a better fit.

Where there was a snowball's chance in hell, before the Miles situation, of Gay ever being traded to the Blazers, you can now take that chance divide it 10, multiply it by 0 and subtract 24 from the result. I wouldn't be surprised if the Blazers and Grizzlies never consummate a trade for at least 10 years.

I think the answer to both questions is "no." Turn up your 'sarcasm-o-meter' brother.

maybe that this is why they resigned Miles, and are going to play him to put his money back on Portland? Maybe Portland pushed for a trade with the grizzles and they said no. Portland said fine we will just get him after the season and they said not if we have anything to do about it.?

    :dunno:

In that case, we should offer him the max.

Good point istolebillwaltonsbike, not only will they turn a profit by signing Miles to a 10-day contract and playing him 2 minutes in 2 games; but they can make it harder for the Blazers to have enough cap space to go after Rudy.

Maybe our goal has always been to go after Rudy Gay and Memphis got word of it and now are trying to prevent us from offering more than they want to spend......now to keep us from offering a close to max contract they are signing Miles?

Carlissimo should be coach at Memphis. Then he could tell mayo to put some mustard on it.

Remember that MEM owner is a cheap SOB....and that he has been seriously contemplating selling that team for awhile...Part (large) of the reason they dumped Gasol was monetarily....

Personally, I think Chris Wallace is a 1st class idiot and I do believe that MEM is screwing POR over...not b\c they are intrigued by MIiles, but b\c they can and they can get tax money for doing so....

Gay will be an RFA...POR will still have $9+ mil to offer, possibly a little more...I would be fine if POR on the 1st day of FA offered Gay the max amount they could with max incentives from that point forward.....and at elast let MEM suck on that contract by matching it.....What does it cost POR? 2 weeks? big deal.....

Regardless though, I don't think POR would do that, no matter how much of a scumbag Chris Wallace is....

Part of me does think that Gay might have been the target all along....I am not convinced that MEM would match a max offer as a lot of people are...don't underestimate a cheap owner.....
