The Ottawa REDBLACKS of the Canadian Football Leaguehave signed wide receiver and Gatineau native Simon Le Marquand. The 6-foot-1, 199-pound 25-year-old became the first player from the Outaouais high school football league to be drafted by a CFL team when the Hamilton Tiger-Cats chose him in the fourth round of the 2013 Canadian College Draft. Le Marquand, who played for the Cégep de l'Outaouais Griffons, graduated to the University of Ottawa Gee-Gees where he excelled as a receiver. In five seasons, Le Marquand gained 1,721 yards on 113 catches and 12 touchdowns. His standout season came in 2011 when he scored six touchdowns and ranked second in Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) in reception yards (867), catches (57) and reception yards per game (108.4). He attended Hamilton's training camp last spring and was released late in the trials, becoming a free agent. Le Marquand is the fifth receiver to join the REDBLACKS. The team selected Carlton Mitchell (Edmonton), Rory Kohlert (Winnipeg) and Wallace Miles (Winnipeg) during Monday's CFL Expansion Draft, and also signed free agent Fred Rouse.
