    Mars men "return" to Earth

Six men locked away in steel tubes for a year-and-a-half to simulate a mission to Mars have emerged from isolation.

The Mars500 project, undertaken at a Moscow institute, was intended to find out how the human mind and body would cope on a long-duration spaceflight.

It is a venture that has fascinated all who have followed it around the globe.

The study even saw three of the men carry out a pretend landing on Mars, donning real spacesuits and walking across an enclosed sandy yard.

"The international crew has completed the 520 day mission," Russian commander Alexey Sitev announced after stepping through the opened hatch of the Mars500 "spaceship".

"The programme has been fully carried out. All the crew members are in good health. We are now ready for further tests," he told those gathered to witness the emergence.

NASA seems to be moving away from manned space flight but hopefully China or someone is wanting to put men on Mars. Kinda doubt broke-ass Russia will pony up the billions for such a project.

NASA wasn't moving away from manned space flight until Obama killed the moon / mars program.

Manned space travel is wasteful, TBH. I'm just hoping someone has the ego to do it anyway.

I'm a big believer in the robot type missions. And almost all the benefit to going into space has been in low earth orbit looking at the earth. Weather satellites, communications, etc.

The risk to humans is considerable and makes the cost really expensive. Plus you can't pack the payload with nothing but instruments - air and food and water take a lot of space.

But the real benefit is that there is some inspiration gained from seeing govt. take on cutting edge things and succeeding.
