Sixers, Cheeks Agree on Contract Extension

The Philadelphia 76ers have agreed in principle to a contract extension with head coach Maurice Cheeks, the Philadelphia Daily News repored Tuesday.

Details of the new deal weren't available. Cheeks had scheduled a telephone conference call for Tuesday afternoon.

Sixers president/general manager Ed Stefanski has been in discussions with Cheeks' agent Lonnie Cooper in recent weeks, with the sides believed to have reached a verbal agreement in the past several days, the Daily News reported.

Since Stefanski's arrival last season, the team has tendered two extensions to Cheeks.

In three full seasons coaching the Sixers, Cheeks is 113-138, including 40-42 last season, when they made their first playoff appearance since the 2004-05 season.
