<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">The potential marriage of the 76ers and Andrew Toney fell apart, general manager Billy King said Monday, because Toney didn't make it to the altar on time. New coach Maurice Cheeks had hoped to hire his friend and former backcourt partner as an assistant coach shortly after Cheeks was named Jim O'Brien's successor on May 23. But negotiations dragged on for several weeks, and by the time Toney was ready to accept the position in late June, King said it was too late. ''When Maurice talked to him, the job was there for him,'' King said at a luncheon where he and Cheeks met with reporters. ''I think Andrew was thinking about it. It went back and forth. ''It came to a point in time where Maurice said, 'All right, we're going to move on,' because I don't think he thought Andrew was ready to make the decision. And when he was ready to make the decision, we were at a point where we were moving on.'' Toney claimed, in an e-mail to a Morning Call reporter last month and in a rare interview earlier this month, that he accepted the job not once, but twice ? the first time via voicemail to Cheeks on June 26, the second time via fax to King on July 10. Ten days later, he was told that the offer of a one-year contract was off the table.</div> link: http://www.mcall.com/sports/all-toneysep27...=all-sports-hed well, this stinks. i dont get it quite clearly, but it seems like toney accepted the offer, only to get rejected by the sixers because he accepted it too late. i just hope that what ever happened, him and the sixers are in good terms. if the sixers didnt want to hire him, they must have something up their sleeves, because i know they arent stupid.
Yeah I read this article a little while ago from what I understand when the offer was first made to Toney a problem he had was the money. He tried to push for a bigger contract to come in and be an assistant. When he saw the 76ers where not budging on their initial offer he accepted it, but King informed him that the deal was no longer on the table and the organization had chosen to go in a different direction. I don?t mind either way if he was hired or not he would have been nice to have, but an assistants roll is limited so it will not have a huge effect. We had Alex English on our coaching staff when Ayers was the coach he was a great assistant, but when Ayers was fired English left soon after.
