What are some of the players with the best basketball IQ?1.The first one I can think of is Tim Duncan. Not super athletic but seems to have moves that catch his defender off balance. 2. Steve Nash- Makes brilliant decisions with the ball in a split second that no one else except maybe Kidd can do.3. Jason Kidd- Lost some of his athleticism and doesn't that great but seems to still be effective.4. Dirk Nowitzki-Uses pump fakes to catch the other player off guard and able to create space well.
How did I know you were going to mention dirk?Steve nash is the definition of a smart basketball player.
Brian Scalabrine is oneI know he sucks but he's probably going to make a good coachhe knows a lot about basketball..he just has no athletic ability whatsoeverEric Snow, Shane Battier etc.

Jarron Collins is one, he has no talent what so ever yet somehow remains in the league. plus he does have a degree from Stanford.
Give Bruce Bowen some credit. I think he is a smart defender. He plays dirty and gets in your head and you lose some focus in the game. He is unselfish and takes a shot only if he is wide open.Agree with the list.

In fact, Kobe Bryant does that better than Dirk does, good one. Nobody has mentioned Sam Cassell yet? He's one of the smartest basketball players in history, shame on you guys for overlooking him...
Alotve players....actually most stars, do exactly what your saying Dirk is doing.Ima go with Earl Boykins, Steve Nash, and defiently Ben Wallace
Eric Snow is also very smart, his atheltisicim needs to match that though, on given nights, he is really hard to gaurd, though his offensive game could use work.

Wow, I can't believe he hasn't been mentioned. He knows the game inside out, he's one of the best defenders ever, he has great vision and knows where everyone is at all times, and he had always had the fundamentals down beautifully (backing down while setting up the offense, which protects the ball, as one example). GP is no doubt on this list.
Steve Nash, Chauncey Billups, Jason Kidd, and Tim Duncan are the easy choices for me.Some other ones are Eric Snow, Shane Battier, and Anthony Parker.
POTG was spot on with Scal. Scalabrine is god awful at basketball, and just putting effort forth, and knowing how to play the game lured Danny Ainge into giving him a big contract. I respect the guy, he plays his ass off, and puts it all on the line.

Pump fake, draw the foul, and hit the shot for a 3 point play.
I seen many players do that... but anyway cassell is definetly a smart player if you actually seen how he plays (especially some years back on the bucks.) He used his signature mid range shot to score on all pgs easily as well as drawing fouls and some dirty defense at times. Players who have their fundamentals down packed are up there too, but smart decision making has to come with those fundamentals. Athleticism just assists with their ability to make those decisions and execute the use of their fundamentals faster and in a more creative, exciting way.
