Sam Smith says some weird stuff and lists out SG targets. He compared Iggy to JR Smith and Gilbert Arenas. WTF To me, most of those guys are in the why bother category. I guess they are to Smith too, since he started the article by saying we need a better SG, then said the guys we've got are fine, then proceeded to list out a bunch of guys who might be better, but most of whom aren't. To summarize Jackson and Parker are too old Brewer has displayed consistent suckitude. If he’s “broken out” it’s from “sucks” to below average. Rudy wants to leave the country, and the Blazers just lost interest in trading him. I’ve never understood why Thornton looked all that great to people. Lee showed a bit of upside, but two years later it’s getting pretty late to say it’ll ever pan out. He’s not a starting quality player. I don’t remotely understand why the Magic would pull a trade that would presumably help us. Mayo and Garcia are the only guys on the list who remotely interest me. When it comes to Mayo, I could imagine it getting done because of the Griz just not being able to afford him. On the other hand, he strikes me as a good but not way above average sort of player. I’m not sure I’d really want to trade all that much to get him. That being said, I don’t know we have much, aside from the Charlotte pick, to get him. Deng for Mayo would be sort of pointless, especially because they’ve got Rudy Gay. They’re reportedly gonna resign ZBo, and Darrell Arthur is kinda similar to Taj. So what do they want in a trade? Just picks? Who do we include to make it work? I guess they could take back CJ and JJ, but that doesn’t seem overwhelmingly great. Garcia is sort of interesting as a player, but he’s 29 instead of 23. I’d give up more for Mayo, but Fran would probably be capable for the remainder of his contract, and he’s a nice, multi-talented player. He reminds me very much of John Salmons in the sense that he’ll do a lot of ok things, and is probably a better, more well-rounded player than what we’ve got now. If, for whatever reason, the Kings would go for JJ + CJ for Garcia, I’d do with without thinking twice. Here's something to consider: If the Sixers want Salary relief, maybe you don't have to give up Deng Come 12/15, Brewer, Korver and CJ are all tradeable too. They offer more bodies and shorter contracts. Would something along the lines of Brewer, CJ, JJ and two firsts (our own plus Charlotte’s) get it done? I’m sure they’d ask for Taj as well, but given that Iggy’s value seems to be in the tank right now, and there’s not exactly a lot of teams aching to take on big contracts, I think I’d play hardball and see what happens. That’d plug us in with a really kick ass team. 1- Rose 2- Iggy, Bogans 3- Deng, Korver 4- Boozer, Taj 5- Noah, Asik, Thomas In many respects, I think Iggy is becoming even more ideal than when I wanted him this Summer. With Deng’s newfound long distance touch, Iggy’s biggest weakness, his own shooting, is not as damaging as it was before. On the other hand, he’s still a way better shooter, passer, defender and all around player than Brewer. And unlike those other guys, “can score when necessary” means he can legitimately drop 20-30 points more than once in a blue moon, and has to be accounted for when he’s on the court.
I wouldn't say Iggy is a way better shooter than Brewer, he just has license to shoot more often. I'm not sure that Iggy wouldn't want to have the ball in his hands a lot. If he could play off of the ball consistently like Brewer and be a lockdown defender, then I think he's an upgrade. Otherwise, not a good fit and not worth the money. He's definitely not a spot shooter that could effectively play off of Rose offensively right now.
Iggy may well be the missing link that we could get for a buck fifty Think about it . If Deng's 3 ball is here to stay and we have Korver as a specialist we really don't need our 2 to be a high volume shoot and made 3 guy. There is no doubt that Iggy is the better player than Brewer . But how much more bang for buck do we get from Iggy that we don't get from Brewer ? Would Iggy be content as a secondary option...in fact I see him in a classic Ron Harper type role for us. Can we check his ego on this team ? I can understand him not doing it in Philly because , well , Philly sucks ass. Noah, Deng and Iggy would make a helluva defensive core in our starting 5 though... plus ..... Iggy is more of a legitimate secondary handler . passing creator than can free derrick up more. I'd go for it So here's my deal Watson, Brewer , JJ plus our 2011 pick for Igoudala and Meeks We then go out and get a minimum point guard guy like Patrick Beverly We're done. Noah Boozer Deng Igoudala Rose bench Asik Insurance Korver Meeks Beverly Thomas Scalabrine
I thought at the time and have never wavered since that Iggy should have been our pick in the first place. If we could get him now without overspending to get him I'm in the Hell Yeah! camp. Mayo at the right price would be awesome as well.
I'm sure you've seen the numbers he dropped last year. They're silly for a rookie and everything we need: 14.5 points in 25.6 minutes a game. So you could call him a jacker, except he shot at 45% from the field and 37% from the three. That's downright prolific for a rookie. Toss in 2.9 boards, again in 25.6 minutes, and 1.6a and you have the makeup, at least statistically, of a real shooting guard. Oh, and he's 6'4 and can do this: I haven't watched enough of him to get a real feel for his play in the flow of a game. But I can absolutely why there was, is, and should be buzz.
Anyone we get at SG who opponents actually have to guard is a huge upgrade. I'm not as down on Brewer as some. You do have to guard him, just not at some distance from the basket. Leave him to patrol the baseline and he'll be dunking a lot. Iggy would be a huge pick up for us, but I wouldn't hold my breath expecting the Bulls to trade for him or believe that Philly wants to trade him.
Yeah, that's pretty nice looking. It's not that I hate him or anything, it's just that I can't fathom how he's now sitting on the bench behind other guys. If he'd come out and convincingly won the job, I'd be feeling much better about him. But as it is, he's a guy who's had a nice stretch and has now fallen back into a pretty undistinguished crown. Kinda CJ Watson like...
Monty Williams has made a bunch of those "it's a two way game" and "Thornton has improved and just needs to continue to improve his defense" type comments. So, I think it's a question of whether Thronton is bad on defense, like many young players are, or whether he is Kyle-Korver-retarded. If Thronton is just bad because he's inexperienced, I don't see what he wouldn't top our acquisitions list (while also probably being impossible to acquire).
