Smoak rejoins Mariners as Carp heads to DL

As expected, the Mariners announced on Tuesday that they placed Mike Carp on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left groin muscle. In a corresponding move, the Mariners recalled Justin Smoak from Triple-A Tacoma. The switch-hitting first baseman was in the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Rays.

Smoak started the season with the Mariners as the primary first baseman, but was optioned to Tacoma on July 23 after struggling at the plate. In 90 games with the Mariners, Smoak is hitting .189 with 13 home runs and 38 RBIs. Smoak has played in 20 games with Tacoma, hitting .242 with six doubles and four RBIs.
