I wanted to becoma a sports reporter when I grow up. I just wanted to know if it's hard to make it as a sports reporter for ESPN or the news.
ESPN is easy, analyse the crap out of the smallest things, claim you knew an outcome would happen all along even though months back you predicted the total opposite and just put an Insider on everything.
I would say so. Their are plentyyy of journalists in the US, and only a handfull of them work for the big names. You can build your way up if you know your stuff. A good way for you to start is to do the co-op course and try to get become an intern/assisstant at a local sports broadcast station so you can show off what you got and get to know people and get connections. I plan on taking Journalism in uni, one year from now, and I've started to write for the school newspaper, take the writers craft course, among other things to help me for the program.

I'm thinking of doing the same too, but there just aren't a lot of options in Ontario. Carleton, Ottawa, U of T and Ryerson? I went to Ottawa in May and absolutely loved it, so hopefully I could go to Carleton or Ottawa.

Now, heading into Grade 12, I want to be a lawyer instead, because 1, I believe I am capable of being one and 2, journalism consists of wayy to much "step climbling" before getting the amount you desire I think. Wheras in law studies, atleast in Canada, there is a period where you are paid just to observe the actions of a court (I don't know when that is exactly but when I went to visit a court room, one of the girls was a university student and she told me so). I know law is a competitive field, but as always, hard work pays off. However, journalism is still my minor option. I think I might even major at somehting like Law and take journalism as my minor. If I were to go into just journalism though, I would definetly aim for Ryerson. Since I want to get into law, I'm aiming for York. But yeah, regarding your post, I am also doing the exact same thing you are (taking writer's craft which counts for 2 credits so I get a spare , and joining school newspaper. I also am planning to write for a magazine for an organization my family is involved with, just to build into my resume. <div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post"> I wanted to becoma a sports reporter when I grow up. You have to be super confident and you have to know your stuff.
Junoon, I'm also giving becoming a lawyer some thought, but you still need a bachelor's to get into law school. York's Osgoode would be good for law school, but first you need to get high marks in your BA studies. That's why I'm probably gonna go the Journalism route as I think I'd be able to high marks in it, thus aiding my possible future advancement to law school.

Only about 160? people get into the program, so i'll be really excited if I get in. Carleton is a nice option (my sis got a scholarship from there but chose Queens instead), but I'm not looking to move right now because of my situation. I'd hate to goto college, but I think I can make it to Ryerson with the subjects I'm taking this year. I didn't know they had the program at U of T. I didn't see it in the book I have. Interesting. <div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">But yeah, regarding your post, I am also doing the exact same thing you are (taking writer's craft which counts for 2 credits so I get a spare , and joining school newspaper. I don't think it's like that at my school, but I hope it is. Is your school part of Peel District?
At UofT, it's a joint program with Centennial College, and is at the Scarborough Campus, which is generally regarded as the worst of the three. You still need a low 80s average to make it.
<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post"> Wtf? 2 credits? I don't think it's like that at my school, but I hope it is. It comes as a joint course with something else so I get credits plus an English one (cause I still have to take Eng). <div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post"> Junoon, I'm also giving becoming a lawyer some thought, but you still need a bachelor's to get into law school. It's either going to be Law studies, Philosophy, Political Science or perhaps Journalism. Either way, you have to get 85+ to have a shot of getting into Law school, not to mention having extracurricular activities as well. On a similar note, I want to ask, what happens if you can't get into law school but you want to pursue a cereer in law? What are your choices then to get into law (specifically, becoming a lawyer). Also, Locke, are you taking any math courses in Grade 12? Is math necessary at all for getting into any of my above choices for a BA or even getting into law school? No, right? I'm confused o nthat aspect because some people say I should take it while some people say I shouldn't Even my guidance counselor (who is perhaps the worst councellor) was lost, he didn't know wtf he was advising me (not like I followed his advice anyway, the guy is more concerned about flirting with girls *shakes head*) Math is my weakest subject and I even took college level Math last year so for Grade 12 I completely dropped Math and took 6 U level courses instead (with one M course).

Math is also my worse subject, I failed it in Gr10 and 11, and had to take them both in summerschool. I took 7 courses (need to make up one for failing two courses in grade 10). Law being one of them, English, Writers craft, Economics, Business, Food & Nutrition (will probably switch out), and World Issues, all uni courses. No maths(though business is some simple math), no sciences, but a whole bunch of writing. Im screwed for law though. Last year my teacher was a c rackhead teacher, didn't know how to mark handle a class, teach or anything. We cheated during the tests like mad. We punked all tests and the exam so we all (my friends and I) got like 85+ but everybody learned nothing at all. Guess we have to do the same thing next year.
I'm sticking by the philosohpy that I take whatever necessary to get high marks. Journalism only requires English, so I took only the classes that I felt I was sure to get 80+ in. I did take Calc and Data (got 85 in Functions and Relations). Other courses I picked are Writer's Craft, English, Physics (probably switch to Accounting or History), and Law. Seven U level courses and I'm gonna aim for an average of over 90% to get sure-fired acceptance to Carleton (cut-off average is 83-87%).

I dropped Bio and Chem (both of which I took last year)...I got high 80's in biology last year, but it was a lottttttttttttttttt of work though, and this year I want to take easier courses (U level of course) where I can get high marks without having to shoulder as much responsibility as science courses bring. There's a lot of work involved in U level science courses. Chemistry I did horrible on so I'm switching it for business. Only thing is I took ANOTHER science and I have to switch it for another business but it's going to be an M level course since I didn't take business in grade 10, which I regret. <div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post"> I did take Calc and Data (got 85 in Functions and Relations). I suck at math I am taking Writer's Craft, English, World History, Law, Society Challenge and Change (follow up to psychology) and two business courses. Also, to get into University, is the requirement that you must have six ALL university level courses or can it be M as well? Cause going on my current schedule, I'll only have 5 U courses (even though WC is 2 credits) and two M courses. I'm aiming for 90 average as well, but it will require A LOTTTT of hard work. I tend to slack off quite a bit but I will basically have to be lifeless for at least a semester, I'm going to start applying around February. From now on, everything you do counts so I really guess the irresponsible days and slacking off are over <div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post"> Math isn't a requirement to get into law school, but taking a math course and doing well in it intrugies schools. I took C level in Math in grade 11 and ended up with 80 something because I knew I wasn't going to take it again. This is the same thing I did with French in grade 9. <div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">We punked all tests and the exam so we all (my friends and I) got like 85+ but everybody learned nothing at all. I killed assignments cause I found them easy but never studied for tests and everyone in the class failed the tests cause everyone percieved law as a fun class (which it was) and never studied. I didn't even get an 80 in that class (finished with a 78) which I'm still mad about.
I got an 88 in Gr. 11 Law. Hopefully my 85 in Math in Grade 11 would translate to like 88 in Grade 12 lol. But yeah, universities consider your top six marks that are U or M, so Junoon you are fine.
I plan on goign into law, and since this is my senior year, I have loaded myself down with AP and honors courses to bring up the crappy freshman year I had. As for college, I plan on majoring in business, since I believe i am suited to do that if the law thing falls through. I was thinking on specializing on corporate law or falling back on investment banking, so i would still be in about the same field. But I guess I'll see how that takes me
