With five days left to extend Tony Parker's contract before an NBA deadline, the point guard's agent said Wednesday he has ended talks with the Spurs after team officials declined to increase their six-year, $64 million offer.

"We've been told (Spurs chairman) Peter Holt won't pay a penny above $64 million," said Marc Fleisher, Parker's agent. "We respectfully think Tony's value is higher and that it just makes more sense for him to wait until the summer."

If the Spurs do not extend Parker's contract by Sunday, he will become a restricted free agent at the end of the season. The team will have the right to match any other offer he receives.

So anyone think we can make a run for him? It seems like the Spurs don't want to give the young PG over 64 million dollars. Do we have enough for this guy? We would probably need to offer over 64 million for us to have an effect on T-Parker. Next season he's gunna be a restricted FA!
Seriously if the Rockets get ahold of Parker we are going to be DOMINANT! [IMG] [IMG]

There's that little thing called the salary cap stopping you from taking Parker, Houston can't offer anything above the MLE nevermind 64 million.

I'm abit mixed about this situation of the Spurs not giving him more than 64 million, on one side the Spurs could lose him If a team offers him 70 million and therefore not matching the offer as he will get that kind of offer from some team. Really what is 4 million difference? Parker wanted 68 million but they only are willing to cough up 64? why not just give him the extra 4 million? better than getting worried all summer If he will re-sign. On the Spurs point of view, Parker really hasn't yet proved he is worth anymore than 64 million. No point in overpaying If he can't go to another level in his game even though I expect he will.

TP won't be leaving San Antonio but It would of been much easier for the fans and the team by giving him what he wanted instead of having to deal with matching an offer next summer.

    San Antonio is being smart.

They know they will most likely be very successful this year, perhaps even win a championship. Once next season rolls around, San Antonio is going to look like one of the top places for free agents to flock to (as it always is). Next year, they're going to have an open spot for a big name starting point guard who they can probably get cheaper than market value simply because they are the Spurs and FA's feel it's a team that can get them a ring. They'll get someone better for 64 mil probably. If Parker is gone and they haven't picked up a PG to replace him, they just throw Barry in as a starter and they've got about 10 mil a year to offer a free agent...maybe a semi-star SF.

Then you're looking at the following starting lineup:

    PG - Brent Barry
    SG - Manu Ginobli
    SF - 10 Mil FA
    PF - Tim Duncan
    C - Rasho Nesterovic

Not bad. Not bad at all.

Gotta love Parker though he is a player and most all teams that can will covet him.

Spurs won't have the cap space next season to get a 10 million free-agent, they can offer what they can due to having TP's birdrights. Also history has proved It is never easy getting free-agents to sign with the Spurs even If you have plenty of money to spend. Guys like Jason Kidd, Jermaine O'Neal and PJ Brown all passed on the Spurs two years ago even though they were being offered heavy contracts while also being the defending NBA champions at the time.

Right now the Rocdkets dont even have the money to afford Parker, considering they want to sign Tracy Mcgrady to a contract extension.

Not sure why PJ Brown didn't sign, but I'm thinking that Jermaine wanted to be the MAN, and that wouldn't happen with Duncan on the Spurs. And Kidd needs an up-tempo style to thrive, and that also wouldn't happen. But for guys willing to be role players on a perennial title contender, San Antonio is the place to be as long as Tim Duncan is there.

There is no way the Rockets will get Tony Parker. Unless we clear out some cap space, we won't have any more than the MLE to offer him. Besides, we have to reserve any cap space we have to get ready to re-sign Yao. Besides, Parker isn't worth any more than the MLE IMO. He has always had great playoff performances, but never really plays up to expectations in the regular season. I think we'll be better off depending on veterans come playoff time anyways.

If I leave this thread open, it's obvious that the discussion would continue to be about the Spurs anyways. So with this, I am locking the thread.
