Are you kidding me? Gregg Popvich is doing an excellent job. He's trying to "find" his team right now, though, and continues to try and work on free throw shooting and defense. He also signed a two year extension before Christmas.
Where is the link to this story? I don't agree with that. This guy takes the Spurs to the championship twice then he gets replaced? This ain't Byron Scott, he won the damn thing twice. The Spurs are somewhat struggling but to quit on the coach this early is borderline mutiny. Personally I don't think this will happen
He hasn't been around so long because he's winning 20 games a season. 1999-2000 and 2002-2003 are the magic seasons, and the Spurs always pick up after the All Star break.
Well the Spurs are champs, and they have one of the lowest payrolls in the NBA. That just doesn't happen in today's NBA! The reason the Pat Riley/Dallas Mavs rumors were killed was because Riley has contract obligations to Miami as their President. I also think he has part ownership... but I dunno. Anyway I think it's something like he couldn't coach for another team for 2 seasons because of his current contract. Making this just as impossible as Riley to Dallas. Not to mention it's not a great move. You're not firing Terry Stotts or Eric Musselman, who haven't been winning and are relatively unproven, we're talking firing GREGG POPOVICH!! It's not THAT big of an upgrade if you even can concider it an upgrade. Now if Tim Duncan has a problem with Pop, than of course you'd have to concider making a move... but if this is to make an improvement, I don't really think it is. It would take time to buy into Riles' system, that is if the Spurs (Duncan) can even win with his system... so why dump what works for something that may work?
Yeah this doesnt make sense at all...I actually like popovich as a coach and think he's doing a great job...When you look at it, all the Spurs consist of is Tim Duncan and an inconsistent Tony Parker...all the rest are role players...Pop is a great defensive mind, and without their stingy defense, the Spurs would be in a lotta trouble, especially since they are sub-par offensively...
<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">they are sub-par offensively...</div> Only some nights.
No way that's gonna happen. Riley is never going to coach a team at least this season. It's not like the Spurs are playing like the Heat anyways.
Pop is one of the top ten coaches in pro basketball today, probably top 5. Over the past 10 years, his resume is far more impressive than Riley's. No reason for this move, and its not gonna happen. Not just bringing in Riley; the Spurs aren't gonna get rid of Pop. He's one of the last coaches in the league who can dictate to management, and not the other way around.
I'm not sure who has been telling you this rubbish,as It certainly isn't true.Pat Riley? are you kidding me? the same coach who has proved he can't win unless he has plenty of talent? get out of here....Is It Pop's fault Duncan's team-mates aren't making shots? just look at the Spurs record,It should be better against the elite teams but I'm pretty sure every other team would love to be in the Spurs situation at this current moment in time. Also I will add in that Pop is basically the guy who runs the franchise,so that makes it even more possible him leaving.
<div class="quote_poster">Quoting spursfan2theend:</div><div class="quote_post">I heard in the newspaper that the spurs are considering letting pop go and hiring Pat Riley.</div> Spurs are crazy if they are going to do that. He doing a great job with the Spurs. Even if they did fire Popovich, they shouldn't hire Riley.
lets see a link!.... but this seems dumb ot me. Poppovice(Sp?) is oding a great job right now. Why disturb something great?
May I add, when Popovich coached his first full season with the Spurs in 97-98, he got 56 wins that year. The least wins he's had since beginning to coach the Spurs is 53. What other coach has done that? Of course, this is partially due to their prior season. In 95-96, the Spurs were injury plagued through the entire season, only winning 20 games. Popovich took over after the prior coach was fired because of a 1-15 start. Robinson was out over half the season, Elliot was out almost all of it, Avery Johnson too. Just no end to it. So what happened? They became the lottery team, and Popovich picked up Tim Duncan. And this is what followed... 2002-03 60 22 .707 2001-02 58 24 .707 2000-01 58 24 .707 1999-00 53 29 .646 1998-99 37 13 .740 1997-98 56 26 .683 1996-97 20 62 .244 The lowest win percentage is .646. Now, who wouldn't want that?
Whoa very impressive improvement in win percentage. Coaches play a big part in victories since they pretty much control the team. I admit I'm somewhat bias as I don't like Popovich but he's a far better coach then Riley. His roster is more impressive yes, but he's much fairer and gives others minutes excluding Smith and Kerr when they were still Spurs. Anyone willing to give away someone who really improved the team and got them some gold is damn crazy.
Firing pop would be silly....He is a great coach..and he gets on well with Timmy..Its not Tims or Pops fault....Its Tims teamates who are WAAYYY to inconsistent...But duncan never calls out his teamates in public no matter how horrid they play...People that said TD is nothing without D-Rob are blind...TD literally has to put this team on his back andhave over 30 points and 15 boards AT LEAST for them to win...Depeding on is malik can come in and make something..Back to the topic lol...Pop has a good connection with this team..Hes a players coach...Someone they feel comfortable with...Its no good firing him now..That would just mess things up completley!!
