Former Chicago Blackhawks' star and current team ambassador Stan Mikita has stage one oral cancer, the team announced on Tuesday.

"Stan has been diagnosed with an early base of tongue cancer and the prognosis is excellent. He will be treated with external beam radiation therapy," Dr. Richard Borrowdale said in a statement.

The cancer is considered treatable and non-life threatening.

Mikita played for the Blackhawks from 1958-1980 and is the franchise career points' leader with 1,467. He serves as a team ambassador along with former Blackhawks legends Denis Savard and Bobby Hull.
