"A disoriented man brought a knife to the Cavs game Saturday. The Clippers provided the fourth-quarter daggers.

The Cavs lost to the Clippers 100-92 on a surreal afternoon at Staples Center that began with a man running onto the court and flashing a steak knife about two hours before tip-off. Police apprehended him after a 30-minute standoff, firing guns containing bean bags to finally subdue him.

No one was hurt, but the incident caused mass confusion for both teams before the game. The arena was locked down and players were confined to their locker rooms.

The Clippers dancers were practicing their routine and Christian Eyenga was the only Cavs player on the court when the man appeared with the knife.

''The cheerleaders said, 'He's got a gun! He's got a gun!' '' Eyenga said, learning later it was actually a knife. ''I was scared. I started running. I don't know where he came from.''

Clippers guard Randy Foye was sitting on the court with one shoe off when he saw the man streak by with the knife.

''I look up and somebody is standing 15 feet from me with a long, shiny knife,'' Foye said. ''I'm looking like, 'Is this real?' I was in shock when I saw it. I got up and ran across the court.''

The arena was beginning to fill with fans and Foye noticed kids congregating by the court.

''We were thinking about the worst-case scenario, if he would have grabbed one of those kids and held them hostage or something,'' Foye said. ''If something had happened with one of those kids, it would have been heartbreaking.''

The man arrived at the arena's employee and media entrance about 1:43 p.m., Staples Center General Manager Lee Zeidman said. When security officials asked to see his credentials, he pulled out the knife and told officers to get away from him. Arena security contacted Los Angeles police and soon the court was filled with off-duty and on-duty officers.

Foye said he heard the man shouting to police, ''What are you going to do, shoot me?''

They did - with bean bags, not live ammunition."
