Steelers add Patrick Bailey to the roster

The Steelers released running back Gary Russell today in order to sign rookie linebacker Patrick Bailey from their practice squad.

Bailey likely is needed on special teams because fellow rookie linebacker Donovan Woods is injured. Woods played well on special teams through two games.

It's possible that Russell would be re-signed next week and Bailey put back on the practice squad if Woods is healthy.

The Steelers released second-year running back Gary Russell on Saturday and promoted rookie linebacker Patrick Bailey from their practice squad to their 53-man roster.

Bailey excelled on special teams during the preseason and could dress today against the Eagles since Donvovan Woods, who played on the Steelers' kick coverage teams in the season opener, is out for the second straight week with a hamstring injury.

The 6-foot-4, 235-pound Bailey played his college ball at Duke.

Before suffering a season-ending knee injury in the Blue Devils' sixth game in the season in 2007, he had recorded 37 tackles -- seven for losses -- and 4 1/2 sacks.

Russell made the Steelers as an undrafted free agent last season and carried seven times for 21 yards in three games.

He was inactive for the Steelers' first two games this season.
