About 13 years ago, I was visiting my sister and her kids. We went out to eat at a restaurant with a friend of hers.

They were playing music, and "reeling in the years" comes on.

So I dead pan to my sister and go "You know, you've been telling me you're a genius since you were 17. In all the years I've known you, I still don't know what you mean".

Before the singing started my sisters friend looked at me and said "that's pretty funny!"

And then the lyrics came over the speakers and she looked really dumbfounded.

You couldn't fake a Steely Dan tune in a cover band without doing some woodshedding...clever songwriter...saw him occasionally in Hilo when I lived there...I think he produced a few recordings for Hapa and other Hawaiian bands...great, tasteful guitarist. I love his work.

Steely Dan is my favorite band of all time. So sad to hear this.

Always loved these guys. One of the sickest hip hop songs from the 90s used a Steely Dan sample.....

Many of you probably know this, but the band name Steely Dan was inspired by the name of a strap on dildo from the book, "Naked Lunch" by William Burroughs.
