If this is true, that is a awful job by Sather. He's well worth that over 2 years. Gimme a break. I thought the guy was asking for 4.5 or 5 million. A lot of teams would give him that. I can't believe dumbass Glen is screwing with the kid over 3.5 million. Freakin trade Pyatt who is useless and sign him.
A couple of weeks ago the Post reported that Stepan was asking $5m, while Sather was offering in the $2.8-2.9 range. That was while all the stories were saying we werent close, etc. Im glad to see progress has been made and theres no reason Sather can't free up Pyatt's money and give Stepan what he wants.
Sather always wins the rfa battles and if you have some talent u have to do this so you can keep them. Stepan got a reality check and now hope they can agree quickly so he doesn't miss too much time
I don't believe anything the Post reports. The clubs and players most likely get a good laugh at how inaccurate the reporting is. I'm sure the deal will be done very shortly.
Derek wants 2 years 7 million the rangers are offering 2 years and i believe it's 6.3 million. Sather is not an idiot. He's playing to the cap. Believe it or not but with the cap being lowered drastically for this year he needs all the open space you can get in order to sign a mid season guy for half price to help for a playoff push. if simon gagne goes unsigned through the first two months of the season i can see the rangers make him a good offer. Also you guys gotta remember, dereks age and his place as far as being like a somewhat rookie still plays to the rangers advantage. smart move by sather. the kid wants to be a pain in the ass? sign morrow
starting to get ugly http://espn.go.com/new-york/nhl/sto...rs-needs-get-little-wiser-says-gm-glen-sather
Sather is really starting to piss me off The problem is he knows Derek has zero leverage and so he wants to be a dick
http://www.nhl.com/ice/blogpost.htm?id=20605&navid=nhl:topheads "I find it frustrating that some teams are in a hurry to sign these guys to big contracts. I think it's because the owners or managers panic and it's unfortunate that he has listened to his agent and decided [to do] that." Agree with him on that point. But you can't go around calling a guy who you want to be here in the long term a fool. Even if he didn't directly call Step a fool, everyone knows what he means.
3 million is fair. It's not Sather's fault other teams are morons offering half ass players 6 years at 24 million. If Sather was offering him 2.5, I would side with Stepan. If Sather offers 3, I can't rip him. I would pay him 3.5. IMO he is worth it. However, Sather is trying to make an example of him. The reality is that Stepan hasn't been as nearly good in the playoffs as McDonagh has.
I think $3.5 per is fair. Especially with these stupid Henrique and Nugent-Hopkins deals. Agents see those other deals and everybodys price goes up. If it was 4-5m ask from Stepan camp I would blame the player/agent. Just give him $3.5m and be done with it. Instead he rips him publicly. Thats why some players get traded when their bridge deals expire.
