Brooks talks about it today...looks like we're not even close right now on terms

Earth to Sather. Trade Boyle and Pyatt, dump that salary, pick up extra picks. replace them with Lindberg and pay Stepan a couple million more.

Crap. I was worried about this last week when I heard what he was asking. He doesn't have the seniority for sather to have to break the bank for him at this point. This is going to suck big time. Dubinsky number 2

He's lost if he's truly expecting 5m, he hasn't earned it yet. He should take 2y/7m and go from there.

Kadri just signed for 2 years at 2.8M per year. I think almost identical point totals last season, although Step is a little more proven than Kadri. Don't see how he gets anything other than about 2Y 3M per year or so.....hopefully his agent realizes this and doesn't make it messy with any kind of extended holdout here.

The kid will get his money, it just CANT be this year with the cap dropping so much. They can sign an extension during the season.....

I agree Vro. Love Step but he's dreaming if he thinks we can give him 5m per right now

Regardless of how much others are making, it's a dumb move by Stepan to hold out, unless he's being low-balled with some $1.5M/yr offer.

Making it worse is that this team is learning an entire new system right now. He needs to be there or he will get behind quick.

ha, just read the Brooks article and in the picture Stepan looks like some mid 30's year old with the goatee and balding.

Shocker.....Thanks moron Lou for giving Henrique 6 years 24m. I said it at the time that contract would greatly inflate Stepan's self worth.

if we are dumb enough to believe Henrique's contract is the sole reason Stepan is looking to get $5M+, then that looks like a smart move on Lou's part, driving up Stepan's price.

It's not a smart move by Lou. He makes only dumb moves now. That's why the Devils suck now. All that stupid contract did was eventually make every average player on his own team want that kind of money. We have seen this before with Sather and players. He'll sign.

Sather hasn't traded Boyle or Pyatt yet because he wants the pre-season to make sure a couple of prospects can fill in until Cally and Hagelin return. Once he is sure of that, he'll clear more cap room.

Disappointing on Stepans behalf, Hes still young enough to get a bridge deal and sign a more lucrative deal in 2-3years which would be better for him anyway, more years and more money then as apposed to now. And yes Lamoriello is making ridiculous deals, mainly cause no one wants to play in the shadow of NY for a second rate franchise, regardless of how many championships they have.

    Interesting quotes from Sather today:

"Sather said Stepan seems open to the team's standard two-year "bridge deal" but that the sides remain "too far apart" on dollars to make a deal."

If you're open to the bridge deal, work with the team, play your ass off and then get the big reward (deal) in 2yrs.

"[He's] a good player, but you've got to be careful. You don't want to miss too much time here."

    Certainly a warning here.

I don't think Stepan is to blame here. This is a case of Sather keeping entirely too many spare parts around like Boyle, Pyatt, D. Moore, Asham and Zuccarello because he is afraid to go with prospects like Lindberg, Fast, Miller and Kristo. It's just stupid. That's over 8 million dollars of bodies the team doesn't need as nearly as much as Stepan. I mean, Moore and Boyle could actually really help create a top 4th line. I could absolutely see a 4th line of Dorsett-Moore-Boyle. I think that would be a very good playoff 4th line. However, why is Pyatt on this team? Or Zuccarello? There is no reason for it. That's 2 million right there and you could sign Stepan and be done with this.

    Kreider-Stepan-Nash
    Pouliot-Brassard-Kristo

No matter what you do, something like this will have to carry you through the first 9 games. You are going to have to rely on defense and Stepan-Nash to carry you to .500 until Cally and Hagelin get back. Keeping role players around so you can't sign Stepan is not the answer. Is Zuccarello really going to be that much better than a kid like Kristo or Fast on the second line for 9 games? I don't see it.

They'll stare each other down for another week and then Glen will win out like he always does.

Not the point...step has no leverage. They can sign step..I'm not concern because sather has found trading partners...I see sather is saying I won't over spend when I have all the leverage. He doesn't want to make the same mistake like he did with dubi.
