.....are they the best shooting duo...ever? You could make the argument. Also, Allen and Cassell are also in the mix in my eyes.
That's hard to measure, because back in the day, before the three point line and before the dunk, when the game was also less athletic, there were a lot of great shooters. You can't compare them statistically from three, because well, there wasn't a three point line. You also can't compare them statistically in terms of FG%, because they were looking for different shots. For example, I'd imagine that Jerry West and Gail Goodrich were a pretty damn good shooting duo in their day, but we don't really have the stats to compare the two. With that said, I also think that a lot of people are discounting Curry and Thompson because they're both young and relatively new to the scene. It's easy to dismiss them in an incredulous voice, saying "Seth Curry and Klay Thomspon?!? Get out of here man! What the hell have they ever proven?" That's just the thing about talking about all-time greatness for current players though, especially this young. We could look back at this duo 20 years from now, after multiple All-Star appearances for the both, singing a different tune. EDIT: Was thinking about it, and Monroe and Frazier were probably a deadly shooting combo as well. I'm sure there are several better examples from back in the day, but West/Goodrich and Monroe/Frazier are the ones that are coming to my head right now...
I think Steph Curry is going to go down as the best shooter of all time. Health is an issue but he just had the best 3 pt shooting season in NBA history and guys on an absurd pace thus far into his career. Has more career 3's than Larry Bird already. Best shooting backcourt of all time? Its hard to think of a better one. Curry will be one of the best, if not the best shooter of all time and Klay might go down as the #2 shooter of this new era. The thing that separates these guys so much is that both can do more than just spot up. Their numbers are better than or right with the rest of the elite shooters in the NBA, but those other guys all take almost only spot up shots.
http://www.basketball-reference.com/teams/UTA/1998.html Stockton shot .429 from 3 Hornacek shot .441 from 3 Eisley shot .407 from 3 There's 3 guards over .400 (Jack shot > .400, too, for GS) That was my first hunch after a few seconds of pondering the question.
That was with the shortened 3 pt line no? I'm on my phone so I can't check but I'll bet Curry and Klay blew them out of the water in number of attempts and % of shots off the dribble, off screens, unassisted, etc.
