"The Tampa Bay Rays want to move shortstop Jason Bartlett and have limited options. The Padres desperately need a shortstop -- actually, any middle infielder. Tampa Bay needs bullpen help. The Padres have an abundance of relief pitchers. And last Wednesday, the Padres and Rays apparently worked out a deal benefiting both sides -- a trade that would bring Bartlett to the Padres in exchange for pitchers Adam Russell and Cesar Ramos. But in four days since, a strange silence has fallen over both camps. Calls and e-mails to Padres General Manager Jed Hoyer over the weekend got no response. Ditto for those in Florida seeking comment from the Rays. Is the trade off? Is it delayed? Is it being changed? Was there ever a trade? No one knows because no one is talking. Since word of the possible trade came down, the only comment came from Bartlett, who is conducting a camp in Hawaii."
