Someone on reddit mentioned they think Carlisle and Stotts talking late on the phone. I hadn't even thought of this. Any guesses if this will happen? Are there any social rules against this?
I said that in the forum yesterday. There is nothing in the rules against it. Carlisle would love to see Stotts defeat the Spurs and I'm sure has some great advice for him.
Stotts: After 7 games what can you tell me to help beat the spurs? Carlisle: Lillard Stotts: Would you like to elaborate on that? Carlisle: Give the ball to him and get the hell out of the way
On the flip side: "Gregg, it's Kevin McHale." "Hey, Kevin, how are you?" "Pops, I just wanted to give you some advice on how to stop the Blazers." "Hello? Hello? Gregg, are you there?"
The connection is a double edge sword. Sure I think it's possible the RC is willing to help out Stotts, but the Blazers also run a lot of the same stuff as the Mavs, which means that the Spurs have already been prepping for them the last two weeks.
I wouldn't say "advice" but more about the little things. Things like: how does splitter position defend? Like does he grab, where, tendencies These are things that film doesn't tell the entire story. Knowing how a player gets advantages is a great asset. I'm sure stotts feels like he can coach the team fine. But knowing the sweet spots and how a player like manu flops can help players like Matthews and co to defend
I think you're spot on. They have a great relationship obviously. Carlisle was big in recommending Stotts for the Blazers.
How many years was Carlisle an assistant here? I always thought he would have made a great head coach for us.
