With this season and next season to go on his contract, Stotts’ position is now considered tenuous by rival GMs and scouts. One big reason: Allen’s recent death has put a cloud over the franchise. Allen’s sister, Jody, has maintained a large presence with the Seattle Seahawks, also owned by her brother. All signs point to her continuing to keep the football team in the family. But over the years, she has had virtually no relationship with the Blazers, leading to speculation that Vulcan Inc., Paul Allen’s company, could put the team up for sale in the near future
It makes perfect sense not to negotiate a new contract right now. Stotts has been the head coach for the Blazers for 7 seasons and has 2 years left on his contract. That's pretty long by today's standards so odds are that a change will be in order in the foreseeable future so why get locked into an expensive long term contract? There are still 2 years left to make that decision. It has nothing to do with how good a coach Stotts is, but more to do with the economics. I already see that some of the media are trying to make it seem that Stotts job is in jeopardy right now, but I don't see it that way at all.
There's no excuse for getting our asses handed to us by LA like that. We are going to continue to lose games like this with him as HC. Period. Either the franchise wants to change that, or they don't. That's really all there is to it. Stay as a 40-ish win first-round sweep exit team, or get a new coach.
It's not Terry's inability in question. It's about the Allen family making a decision to keep this franchise with the sale determining the sacking of decision makers above. Perhaps the Topic should address that avenue.
With Allen's passing, the only way we're going to get rid of Terry before his contract ends is if he decides he's willing to walk away for significantly less than his contract is worth. The team certainly isn't going to fire him, pay him full value, and then have to pay another coach. And why would Terry leave money on the table? Unfortunately, I think we're stuck with the chump until his contract ends. So - enjoy the middle-of-the-road while we're stuck here!
2020 will be a big Summer for the Blazers and the Future. We may get or new Coach (or in other words: hopefully we get a new Coach), and all these garbage contracts Neil handed out in 2016 finally expire. So we have Cap Space to sign other Players, Neil better not mess it up in two years or he can go with Stotts
Neil's survival instincts are first rate. He was able to survive a bunch of ill advised signings that would have run just about any other GM out of town. I wouldn't doubt he can stomach a few more. Ultimately though, I think it's the prospective new owner(s) that worry him the most. If the new group includes anybody with front office aspirations, like a former player, there is a good chance he's gone.
Can't Chris McGowan do anything? Or even Neil Olshey, if they think the team isn't going in the right direction?
I'm sure someone CAN do something, but I'd almost be willing to bet that the team lets both Neil's and Terry's contracts run out. At that point, I'd almost be willing to bet that neither of them are brought back. I suspect we have new owners by the summer of 2020. Until then, the team is in a holding pattern. Doesn't make any sense to eat money that's already owed to the GM & coach. I'd LOVE to be wrong - the sooner that Terry is gone the better, IMO. But I'm resigned to him being here through the end of his contract.
Totally random, but saw the "Stotts-for-Walton trade idea and it got me thinking...and thus became tonight's non-game trivia question: Of LeBron's now-16 years in the NBA (1152 games out of about 1250 games possible), how many games has he played for a white coach?
