Light heavyweight contender Sullivan Barrera (21-1, 14 KOs) took advantage of an over-punitive referee Michael Ortega run amok to defeat Felix Valera (15-2, 13 KOs) by an unimpressive 10 round unanimous decision on Saturday night on HBO Championship Boxing at Madison Square Garden in New York. Both fighters hit the deck in round 1. Valera landed a hard left to the jaw of Barrera that put him down. In the final seconds of the round, Barrera returned the favor in landing a glancing left hand that caused Valera to lose his balance.
