"That's just like an extra little nag in the back of your neck."

Grant, in his 12th season, has played in Sacramento, Portland, Miami and Los Angeles. He's been in locker rooms where one player whispers about another. He's seen cliques form, rumors start.

But here, "When there's a basketball problem or you start to see tension," Grant said, "it gets worked out quick. Because somebody says, 'Why'd you say that about such-and-such.' They're right here. Let's talk about it."

That approach starts with Steve Nash, who shares captain duties with Grant and Shawn Marion.

"He's the MVP," Grant said, "and other than seeing him play, I wouldn't know. Every other team that I've seen, the best player, they let you know it. . . . But with him, he's so subtle and laid-back and humble, and when it's coming from the top, it trickles down. It's like, if you're being an (expletive) and Steve Nash isn't, it's really going to make you look like an (expletive)."</div>

Even when he's not trying, he's being a leader. Nash for 2006 MVP.
