    The $3.6 million trade exception, which could have offset a salary gap in a trade, expired as few teams needed to dump a contract. The candidate of late appeared to be Charlotte power forward Melvin Ely, but it was of little interest to the Bobcats. It became less appealing to Phoenix with Ely, a restricted free agent, seeking more years in a sign-and-trade deal. Ely's qualifying offer with Charlotte is worth $3.3 million, a salary that would have cost the Suns nearly $8 million due to luxury tax implications.     I take it you did not the read the article after you pasted it. Key word being EXPIRED.

    I don't think he read the article at all considering words were in the past tense.
