Box Score Recap First off, the defense looked tight tonight. After the previous game in which Gransberry had 20 points and 17 rebounds vs. Rutgers, Syracuse and Onuaku came in tonight and played solid zone defense against Gransberry, while attacking the basket and just providing an all-around offensive game against USF. Greene came in and did exactly what's been expected of him - to bring firepower in from the start with 21 points in the game, while Flynn and Jardine shared playmaking duties, with a combined 14 assists. Harris had another double-double, with 20 points and 13 rebounds, while Onuaku chipped in with another double-double himself, with 16 points and 12 rebounds. What separated Syracuse from USF in this game, in my eyes, was the fast break, and the down-low play of Onuaku and Greene. Greene came in and used a few moves including a couple nice hook shots, showing his all-around game on the offensive end. He continues to show that foul trouble may be a problem though, as Boeheim has had to repeatedly pulled Greene from the game in order to prevent him from fouling out. Onuaku, on the other hand, held his own against Gransberry, and continued showing that he is a premier big man in the Big East. In two Big East games so far, he's averaged 19.5 points and 12.5 rebounds, bringing exactly what Syracuse needs down low, and hasn't had in quite a few seasons. Scoop Jardine continues to show his talents. It seems every game, Scoop has come in and shown something new. Two games ago, he scored a season-high 18 points, filling in for Devendorf, while his previous high was 8 points. While last game he didn't exactly impress, he was pretty solid. This game, Scoop came in and contributed 14 points, a career-high 8 assists, and 6 rebounds, showing a good all-around game and some great effectiveness on the fast break, which was quite impressive. Johnny Flynn came in with his usual game, providing solid leadership Syracuse and putting up some pretty good numbers with 12 points and 6 assists. While they weren't great numbers, like those of his teammates, he provided solid play on both ends of the floor. Paul Harris, the reigning Big East Player of the Week, bounced back from an unimpressive game vs. St. John's to put up big numbers, with 20 points and 13 rebounds. He showed his usual hardworking attitude by fighting for rebounds and getting out on the break. Overall, this was a good win for Syracuse. This makes it the 6th straight win for SU, and should be good to build upon as they go up against Cincinatti.
I haven't really followed Syracuse too closely. Who's their main guy right now? What are they projected to do this year.
Laaaame. The refs were out for Syracuse in this game. They made that clear with a technical on Johnny Flynn for...making a layup, and saying nothing...?

Cuse couldn't keep UC off the offensive glass and Cuse lost their defensive focus way too easily when the shot clock was in single digits. Your boy Flynn had several wide open looks from 3 and he made none of them. Jimmy has his coaching work cut out for him as he has a lot of talent out with injuries and the rest of the team looks impatient. Plus he needs to teach his post players how to pass out of the double team. As soon as UC started dropping a guard to double the post everytime there was an entry pass, Cuse's offense fell apart.

Just a random comment about the game that really pissed me off - behind Syracuse's whole game falling apart, the refs were being complete dicks. Really, did you see that tech? Bullshit. And there were some weak foul calls, where they'd call a foul on SU for committing a tap foul, and Cinci would do the same thing to Jackson, Greene, Harris, or Flynn, and the refs would stay silent. Anyways, here's what I really thought about the game: Every time Cinci made a three I started screamin at the TV cause Scoop and/or Donte didn't get out to him. Meanwhile, Johnny and Harris did pretty damn good in that zone. Arinze completely disappeared. He couldn't handle the double-team that well this game for some reason. And Donte was about the take over, and then we went away from him. WTF moment right there. But neither of them were really big on the boards when we needed em. That was the biggest problem. Rebounding sucked, and I was screamin at the TV at that, too. I couldn't figure out why no one wanted to grab a rebound. Also, Boeheim switched defense about 20 times it seemed. They'd go from zone, to man, to zone, to man again in a matter of a couple minutes (even when they got a stop), which baffled me. Scoop played well, but then for some reason he stopped getting the ball and/or driving. And Johnny was really off tonight. Those were shots he'd knock down, no problem most games. Paul was focusing too much on his offense, on shooting the ball, and being a ballhog, instead of playing his role down-low and getting high percentage shots. There's 3 other guys on the team who are better shooters than him, and I hate it when he takes a shot he has no business taking. He's so undisciplined on offense it makes me wanna pull my hair out. Watching this game, on offense, I noticed either they coulda really used Devendorf, or they really didn't let Johnny and Scoop take the ball and create for teammates and themselves.

Flynn mouthed off to a ref with a known short fuse and obviously Jimmy had warned him about it. That is completely on Flynn because the players have to know who is reffing. Late in the second half, Cuse cut the lead way down because UC was getting called for every touch foul when Cuse had the ball. For the game, Cuse committed 21 fouls and UC 19. That was not a game to get pissed about the refs.

That was when the game got outta hand, and Cinci gained a good lead...and picked up momentum. Doesn't help that we're down 3 rotation players and have a limited rotation of 7 players.

There are several members of the roster that wouldn't be on a Big East roster if it wasn't for how desperate Mick was in the Spring of 2006. UC's back up center last season was TE borrowed from the football team. And no, the refs didn't take Cuse out of the game in the beginning. Cuse opened open the game with a 7 point lead and then self destructed by allowing UC to get offensive rebounds.
