I keep hearing about Monte Bell and that physical offensive line that is going to pound the Oregon defense. I think Oregon is going to do just fine and actually shut-down the Wis run game. How we've done in big games: Ohio State avg around 3.0 ypc (153/51 carries) Auburn 5.1 ypc (254/50 carries and 195/46 carries for 4.2 ypc if you take away Dyer's last run) LSU 3.6 ypc (175/48 carries) Wisconsin has been known to struggle in the run game. In their loss to Ohio St (tOSU has the 48th best run defense in the nation) they ran 30 times for net 89 yards for less than 3 ypc. The Buckeys ran a 4-3 and aren't extremely physical or large (NT 281, DT 335, 290, DE 270). Their LB's go 210, 228, and 240. How did tOSU do it? They obviously prepped well for the zone run. They ran a 4-2-5 nickel and focused on controlling the LOS, without worry too much about penetration - although they did sack Wilson 3x. LB's filled the gaps. They trusted their cover guys and responded well to the receiver motion and covered the flat well. I've read numerous reports from that game and what made the difference was the ability to play man coverage, LOS control and capable tackling from the safety position - strengths that Oregon possess. Again, this isn't an overly skilled OSU defense and they've given up some big rushing yards this year. They just took Wisconsin out of their comfort zone. In tOSU's loss to Michigan to finish up the season, they gave up 444 total yards - almost 300 on the ground at 5.5 ypc. Wow! tOSU also played field position and relied on a punter who avg 41.2 ypp to Wis 34.7. No need to point out we have one of the best and most consistent punters in the nation. tOSU also avg 25.6 yards per kick return. So, yah. I'm confident going into this game. I like the way we matchup and have a lot of confidence in our D and NA to dial in and prep the team. I've previously posted how we've played better statistical defenses, yet, on overall rushes per carry for the season, we average a yard more per carry over Wis. We have almost 800 more rushing yards on the season and 21 more 1st downs. I believe we will field better and quicker athletes, a stronger run game, the better defense, the better kick return and kicking game - all behind a better staff. I believe Thomas is the better of the two QB's and LMJ will double Bell's performance. We are, the best team taking the field on Jan 2nd. Let's just not let this come down to a FG kicking match. Ducks Win!
