Someone joked to Tracy McGrady that if he keeps playing defense like this, he no longer may be a go-to SportsCenter highlight.

    McGrady just laughed.

For stretches, T-Mac has been D-Mac this preseason.

Playing in four of the six games, he leads the Magic in steals with 10. He is tied for second behind center Steven Hunter with five blocked shots.

"Until we realize that defense wins games, we're going to have up-and-down seasons," said McGrady, who will lead the Magic in their preseason game against the Atlanta Hawks on Wednesday night. "We have to buckle down."

Magic Coach Doc Rivers' charge to McGrady was simple: You're an all-star and the league's defending scoring champ. Now go out and make the all-defensive team.

"That's been it. People weren't talking about it, but I thought last year he started out in that direction before Grant [Hill] went down," said Rivers, noting that McGrady then had to carry the offense.

In his first season in Orlando, McGrady posted 118 blocks and 116 steals. While his steals increased slightly the past two seasons, his blocked shots dropped dramatically, his energy spent on scoring. The arrival of Juwan Howard and the development of Drew Gooden should ease McGrady's burden.

"This year, he'll be able to focus more on defense, . . . but it's been tough when you have to do everything," Rivers said. "For the first time, Tracy McGrady can be the total package."

hopefully he can improve that and kick kobe off the all defense 1st team and be considered the most complete guard in the nba.

If Mcgrady makes the all defensive team I will give 10$ to every mod on this board...So the chances of Mcgrady joining the all defensive team is VERY unlikely...Rivers may of told Mcgrady to become good at defence and make the all defensive team..but that doesn't mean he will....Just like when you are little kids and your mommy tells you to clean your room.. doesn't mean you did it.

i know i didn't clean my room. tmac has been working hard this offseason, so as long as he stays healthy he can do it. he made it his goal last year to lead the league in scoring, he did it. this year he's making his goal to be on the all defensive team, there's no reason to believe that he won't achieve his goal.

btw, i'll PM u my address so u can send me the $10

You don't turn from a lazy defensive player to an all NBA first team a year later.....If Artest can't get in the all defensive first team Mcgrady has no real chance to...The scoring thing was clear to happen....his defence isn't

the scoring wasn't clear to happen, the best he'd been was like 5th place and 26 ppg, noone thought he would avg 30, much less 32 ppg and lead the league in scoring. the only reason that he was a lazy defender is because he had to use up all of his energy on the offensive end to even give the Magic a chance of winning. you just can't bring it every play on both the defense and offense in the NBA for 82 games. It's impossible. this year tmac has some help so he can take a break a little on the offensive end and that will allow him to step up his defense. anyway you said last year that artest was a forward, tmac is a guard, so it's completely different competitors for that position.

No many were predicting Mcgrady to score 30..He had the game to do it and he would need to do it..You can't compare that to the defence side of things....

And yes Artest was down as forward...KG took his place....If Kobe doesn't make it then a guy like AI will....The all defensive team is messed up anyway....Players like Artest and Bowen not being on it is a complete joke...I don't like the way the format is done.
