"Desperate to show his versatility, Jeff Tambellini did a great impression of a Swiss Army knife on Tuesday at Rogers Arena.

Bubble player Tambellini, whose forte is great wheels and a quick release, was played on the third and fourth lines and, after a solid outing in an offensive role with the Sedins the game before, made a good argument as to why he should be one of the expected 13 forwards the Canucks keep on cut-down day.

The free agent signing finished his checks and scored a highlight reel goal in the second period, as the Canucks took a 3-1 decision over the San Jose Sharks to improve their preseason record to 2-4.

The Port Moody native, who couldn't sign quickly enough as a free agent in July for the NHL minimum $500,000, took a pass from Jannik Hansen near his own blueline, sped down the right wing while backing in Sharks defenceman Niclas Wallin and snapped a short-side shot top corner past goalie Antti Niemi at 7:56 to make it 3-0.

"I was more worried about just playing well and being good in my own end," said Tambellini, asked about his goal. "Sure it helps, finding the back of the net, but playing both zones is important. Playing on the three and four lines, that's part of your job, to create energy, forecheck and kind of being a buzz line."

Tambellini played the previous game, a 4-1 win over Anaheim on Saturday with the Sedins. He had some great chances, but couldn't convert. He started on the fourth line with Alex Bolduc and Tanner Glass, but was moved up to the third line with Manny Malhotra and Hansen."
