"It's what he does often. And it's what he does well.

    Pass the puck.

But Alex Tanguay's first feed in his Calgary Flames (re)debut wasn't so hot.

    Rotten, in fact.

The puck went awry at the attacking blueline, leading directly to a three-on-one where he was the only man back, leading indirectly to the night's opening goal as his mates couldn't clear the zone after the original foray had been defused.

Shifting the puck, however, is the man's bread and butter. There is no Plan B.

So, next chance he got, Tanguay orchestrated a pretty one-timer for Jarome Iginla.

In the second period — and with Pengrowth Saddledome fans bellowing for a shot — he delicately set up Ian White for a dangerous bang-bang play.

Undaunted and unfinished, Tanguay, with his trademark touch, spoon-fed Mikael Backlund for a short-handed tally, squaring the score. The knifed-over pass was a dandy.

Of the much-ballyhooed members of Calgary's first line — which includes Olli Jokinen and Iginla — Tanguay, even with the cough-up, enjoyed the finest night.

Gleefully ragging the puck on the penalty kill. Drawing a penalty by forechecking hard and forcing Vancouver netminder Eddie (The Stork) Lack to hustle out of his crease and handle the puck in the trapezoid.

And, oh yeah, finding Iginla with a long pass in the third period . . . which the Flames captain accepted and smartly rattled home to lift the Flames to a 3-2 triumph over the no-name Vancouver Canucks in National Hockey League pre-season action Tuesday.

"He could've had five assists," Iginla said of Tanguay. "On the power play, he gave me a couple point-blank ones. Olli has some. Whitey had one in the crease. He will shoot the puck, he will score goals. But it's no secret — he's looking to pass first."

The top unit showed flashes of promise. At other times, understandably, they appeared disorganized."
