I'm brainstorming an idea of a tattoo I'm designing.

I don't have any ink done yet so I'm a noob when it comes to the basics of tattooing.

I want a b&w portrait but want it only about 1/2" wide. It's going to be of my grandfather and I'm using his WW2 photo but only half of it. I want to made a band of sort that goes around my arm of different relatives of mine.

Anyway, if it's only 1/2" wide will I lose any of the detail?

That seems kinda small man. I have 8, but no portraits. The only portraits I've seen are on the bigger side.

Totally depends on the resolution of your arm. If it is 1280x1024 or higher, that's probably ok. 1024x768 probably won't get it done, however.

Look on the back of your arm for the specs.

too small man. the tattooist, if they're any good, will be able to get it in there nicely, but it wont stay that way for much longer, the details will fade into one another with out enough space between, and your going to end up with just a blotchy patch of blue.

id say go big for that one, if you dont feel like going big for your first tattoo, get something else done and wait until your comfortable getting something larger.

tattoos are really important things to consider, i get work done every few months, but my designs are ones I made about a year ago, sometimes more. you have to consider so many things, because its gonna be there the rest of your life. when you you get family tattoos, especially granddad ones, you want to do them justice by getting a fuckin nice tat.

ive been planning a large tattoo of one of my granddads ships he served on in ww2, along with some insignia and the like, but ive been planning it for two years now, things start to change even when a small amount of time passes, do some research on your grandads history and you might find something that makes you say "i wish id known that when i got my tattoo done." its sounds like a cool tattoo, so do it justice with a bit more size.

1/2" wide but the length will be somewhere around 3-4" -- I want to use half of the picture (half of the face, etc) so I can fit about four other portraits around my arm. Kind of like an arm band.

That sounds better. Sounds like a cool idea. I just got one for my grandfather in May.
