Terry: Clean Slate For Croatia Clash

England captain John Terry is hoping to erase all the painful memories when he lines up against Croatia on Wednesday...

England's most recent visit to Zagreb ended in embarrassment, as a comical own goal - credited to Gary Neville but caused by Paul Robinson's freshie - sealed a 2-0 win for the hosts.

Matters did not improve for the Three Lions in the return leg, as further goalkeeping blunders - this time by Scott Carson - saw the Vatreni triumph once more.

The outcome of those two defeats was that England failed to qualify for EURO 2008 and Steve McClaren lost his job.

Now with Fabio Capello at the helm, the 1966 World Cup winners are desperate to bounce back by blitzing the qualifying stages to book their place in South Africa.

And Terry insisted he and his compatriots cannot afford to dwell on past failures if they wish to move forward.

"It’s a new campaign and we are going there to pick up three points," Terry said.

"We know it’s going to be tough again, but you just try and rise to the challenge. We know they have not been beaten there for a long time."

Indeed, in 39 games at the Maksimir Stadium the Croats have suffered only a single defeat, which came against France in a friendly fixture eight years ago.

Terry knows a thing or two about impenetrable fortresses at club level. The Chelsea skipper has not tasted defeat at Stamford Bridge since 2004 but, as with England, even the Blues have their bogey teams.

"At Chelsea we have the same kind of thing at Aston Villa because we haven’t won there for a few years, so we know it’s going to be difficult, but we will try our hardest," he continued.

"We have to go there with a clean slate and not think about the last game there and the last game against them at Wembley. We just have to think about this game."
