NEW YORK -- Marcus Thames smacked a two-run, two-out, tiebreaking home run in the bottom of the seventh off Jason Frasor to lift the Yankees to a 7-5 win over the Blue Jays on Saturday. The Toronto bullpen had quieted the Yankees bats, retiring the first eight men it faced. But Robinson Cano knocked a two-out single to center off Frasor in the seventh, and Thames, who had twice hit balls to the warning track off starter Marc Rzepczynski, deposited an 0-1 pitch into the visiting bullpen in left field. It was Thames' 11th homer of the season, but his seventh in his last nine starts. Thames' homer made a winner out of Joba Chamberlain, who pitched out of a jam in the top of the seventh with the help of a controversial called strike three on Jose Bautista. With a full count and two on with none out, Bautista was rung up on a slider on the outside corner by home-plate umpire Ed Hickox. Bautista vehemently argued the call before being ejected. Chamberlain then induced a double-play grounder from Vernon Wells to end the inning. The Yankees needed another solid day from the bullpen. Making his first start since Aug. 21, Javier Vazquez was again ineffective. Vazquez allowed a pair of home runs in the second, a long blast to right field from Lyle Overbay, and a two-run line drive off the left-field foul pole by John McDonald. Vazquez has now served up 29 home runs this season, tied for the most in the American League. Before Thames' homer, the Yankees' offense was ignited by Francisco Cervelli, who had a pair of doubles and scored two runs out of the No. 9 spot of the order.
