The 25 All-Time Philly Sports Teams
by Brad Geiger of The Philadelphia Daily News

    1. 1982-83 Sixers: 65-17, 12-1 post season record, swept LA. Our last real parade.

    2. 1980 Phillies: Lone star in a 124-galaxy of darkness.

    3. 1985 Villanova: Only 25-10. But 25-win, over G-Town in NCAA championship, was one for the ages.

    4. 1980 Eagles: May T.O., McNabb and Co. bump this team down a notch come January.

    5. 1979-80 Flyers: Registered 116 points but victims of non-offside call in Game6 of cup finals against the Islanders.

    6. 1993 Phils: 1-Year wonders but what a year it was until Toronto, ninth inning, game6, World Series.

    7. 2000-01 Sixers: Lost to the Lakers in 5 and not as good as teams in the 80's.

    8. 2003-04 St. Joe's: Called Billy Packer to get his feedback but he was busy planting his lips on the ACC's backside.

    9. 1986-87 Flyers: 46 Regular season wins were seven fewer than each of the previous 2 seasons, but gave Edmonton all it could handle in 7 game cup finals loss.

    10. 1979-80 Sixers: Finished 2 games behind the Celtics but smoked them in conference finals. Fell to Magic and the Lakers in 6.

    11. 1984-85 Flyers: Notched 113 points. Lost in 5 to mighty Edmonton in cup finals.

    12. 1987-88 Temple: Ranked No. 1 for most of the season. Billy King and Duke blanketed Chaney's greatest Final 4 opportunity.

    13. 1981-82 Sixers: Redeemed previous year's sins, beating Boston in 7 before falling to the Lakers in 6.

    14. 2003 and 2004 Eagles: Nearly identical 12-4 teams w/ same hope and same NFC title games meltdowns.

    15. 1983 Phillies: Wheeze Kids fueled late by the Pope. Beat LA in NLCS, lost in World Series in 5 to Baltimore.

    16. 1996-97 Flyers: Manhandled the Rangers in conference finals then choked to Red Wings.

    17. 1988 Eagles: Went 10-6 and NFC east. Without Chicago fog, who knows how history under Buddy would have been written.

    18. 1992-93 Temple: Just 20-13 with Eddie Jones and Aaron McKie but reached Elite 8 before falling to Michigan's Fab5.

    19. 1980-81 Sixers and 1999-00 Flyers: Distant cousins. Each team had great regular seasons and 3-1 conference finals lead before losing to the Celts and Devils.

    20. 1989-90 La Salle: 30-2 under Lionel Simmons. Clemson's 79-75 2nd round win kept the Explorers from sweet 16.

    21. 1984-85 Sixers: Won 58 games and made conference finals for the last time with the Doc, who retired 2 years later.

    22. 1993-94 Penn: Went 25-3, dominatd the Ivy league and beat Nebraska in NCAA's 1st round.

    23. 2003-04 Flyers: Accumilated 101 points in regular season and 101 injuries in the playoffs. Zapped by Tampa Bay in Game 7 of conference finals.

    24. 1992 Eagles: Final Party with Buddy Ryan's players. Went 11-5 and beat New Orleans for 1st playoff win in 12 years.

    25. 1996-97 Villanova: With Kittles and Alvin Williams they spent much of the season ranked in the top 10 before falling to Cal in the NCAA's 2nd round.

I thought it was a good list as well, I really like seeing 1992-93 Temple up there. I followed them all year and thought they really would win it all. I guess they didnt put Smarty up there because he isnt considered a team, would have been nice though.

I was just about to say that. That was a special year they went undefeated in the regular season that is something really rare and special to see. They had two future nba players (jameer nelson and daylonta west) as well as great role players that made the team good. Also I wouldnt be surprised to see there coach coming in as a possible head or assistant coach at orlando or so other team in 2 or 3 years.

I also think that smarty jones should be up there as well though I never thought he would win a triple crown only because there was the same hype over another horse a couple years before and it didnt win. He gave the city of philly hope though for a champ and had a inspiring story.
