Just demote him to assistant. He don't like it, he can find another gig.

The fate of Keith Smart as coach of the Warriors could be revealed this week.

A team source said a decision is expected within the next two or three days, and another source "wouldn't be surprised if he's let go (Wednesday)."

Smart, when contacted Tuesday, said he hadn't heard anything from management and said no meeting was scheduled.

Larry Riley, recently named executive vice president of basketball operations, said on April 15 that the Warriors would begin evaluating Smart in eight or nine days, which would have been last weekend.

The first-year coach led the Warriors to a 36-46 record, a 10-game improvement over the 2009-10 season, the team's final year under Don Nelson.

Smart had only one guaranteed year on his contract. Next season is a team option.

OAKLAND, Calif. -- Keith Smart is out as the Golden State Warriors' coach after one season.

The Warriors announced Wednesday that Smart's option for next season will not be picked up. A coaching search is set to begin immediately.

Smart spent seven years as an assistant with Golden State before he replaced the ousted Don Nelson just prior to training camp.

The Warriors went 36-46 under Smart. That was a 10-game improvement from the previous season, but clearly not enough to appease a new ownership group that has promised sweeping changes to the perennially underachieving franchise.

Smart had a one-year deal with a team option for next season, and nothing short of a rare playoff appearance was likely to save his job.

So who are you guys' favorite prospects to fill in at HC? Just read a Kawakami piece about how he thinks Lacob will follow a OKC model where he tries to find his own up and comers at GM (Bob Myers) and HC. As far as veteran coaches there's JVG, Mike Brown, Sloan, Adelman. I like Adelman the best out of that group (I think I'm convinced Sloan won't sign here though so I'm kind of disregarding him). Would like a more defensive minded guy though.

Corbin was the guy I wanted going into this season, then Sloan got fired...So I saw throw everything you have at him. We have the pieces to run a pick and roll-pick pop. Curry is the perfect guy to run that system

This is exciting!!! Sorry to see Keith Smart go because he was a good guy, but he didn't deliver enough. It was a tough situation because he won some big games, e.g. Chicago, but then lost to some easy teams. Hopefully, he'll get a job elsewhere as HC or assistant.

I got Jerry Sloan at #1 because he's delivered playoff teams. The biggest question mark I have with him is that I want Deron Williams to run point :sigh:. We need a PG who can run this team and be able to drop a lot of dimes. If we get DWill, can they co-exist? Sloan still has to prove he can win a championship and both he and the Warriors can try and prove themselves in the next three to four years. It would probably be his last run.

What the heck! It's Jerry Sloan or bust !!! Show him the money Lacob!!!

I'm a fan of his. Obviously he had talent and great C's in Miami and Orlando but I think hes just a good all around coach. Emphasis on defense, has a better understanding of offense than JVG, Mike Brown, etc., his players really play for him, seems to do fairly well in developing role players.

Van Gundy has great defensive principles (see my earlier quote of his on defense from Dwight Howard); but in order to really make a move, the W's have to find their own Thibidou/Monty Williams/Larry Drew, uncover greatness and pay low. Chasing the past superstar is paying high, and wasted money (unless its Phil Jackson).

Jerry Sloan was not fired. He resigned. He is the best coach out there out of all of the ones mentioned. I rather have Sloan than Thibodeau, Drew or Williams. When you get a chance to get Jerry Sloan, then you show him the money and try to land the big one. I think Sloan will bring discipline and structure to the team. No Monta Ellis going to the rack or Curry hoisting up a three unless it's by design. Most of his teams go inside, so expect David Lee or DWright to go down low more.

I kind of feel bad for Smart. He was not given much notice of becoming the head coach. When was it? Like the week or day before training camp? Then the gm seemed to make no effort to add anyone during the season to help the bench or anything else on the team. I was not a strong supporter of Smart during the season, but I don't think the Warriors treated him that well. I thought they might keep him until they had someone certain to replace him or a top two or three. I didn't see them firing him so soon. Now we may very likelyl have another draft without knowing who the coach is.

Maybe another interesting candidate may be the assistant in LA who is supposed to be highly regarded. Is that Brian Shaw? I think Phil is gone at the end of the season so I don't know if Shaw will be their new coach or what.

Yeah thats the trouble with Shaw. He probably would have come here last season but with Phil possibly out in LA why the hell would he come here? Nice to come back to his hometown but I'm sure LA has long been his home and he would have a GREAT team there.

Unless the Lakers try to pull Howard over by signing SVG??? They'd obviously have to move Bynum and make some creative moves, but the front office has traditionally helped the Lakers make those kinds of moves in the past
