When we negotiated a verbal agreement with Hibbert, we didn't talk shit about the Pacers and we didn't even go through with the deal when we realized that Indy would match. We figured it was worth a shot and moved on. Khan has been talking shit and leaking news to the media like crazy ever since the free agency period began. He refuses to accept that Batum is a pipedream and continues to push ahead as though he actually has leverage in the situation. One has a future in the NBA, the other does not....
Informative new Bucher article. Khan offered 3 #1s or Derrick Williams for Batum. He offered to drop the compensation we owe for knowing Webster was injured. Because Roy will play, insurance won't pay us for Roy's salary. http://espn.go.com/nba/story/_/id/8...a-timberwolves-odds-nicolas-batum-sources-say
What do you mean "drop compensation we owe" for Webster? I wasn't aware that we owed Minnesota anything. They had a chance to examine him before making the trade. Also didn't know about the insurance thing, bummer for Paul Allen, but the amount Paul has to pay Roy is reduced by the amount he earns in Minnesota, right?
The difference is that Olshey does not believe rebuilding with a bunch of projects like Manna from Heaveis a good idea. He also does not draft players that are ineligible and then try backing out. He would not ask for compensation because he failed to do a physical after a trade. He would not submit an offer sheet without cap space. He would not set deadlines every day for a week, threatening and not delivering. He would not have a roster full of high lottery busts all at the same position, forcing him to grossly overpay for a player at a position of need. His job is safe though. His boss.was the guy that was silly enough to put an illegal agreement on papw. He really had to have the greatness that was Joe Smith.
About a week ago, Stern decidedon compensation for a player ith preexisting injury. Which 2 teams was it, I forgot. Yes, the article says Allen's liability is reduced by Minny's $10M.
Shouldn't the fact that Kahn is pulling a Darius Miles/Memphis on PA be enough? Be careful Kahn, or you may wake up next to a bloody Windows XP box one morning...
But it was Kahn who courted Roy and paid him the most - just to make sure he stuck it to PA (at least in my mind). EDIT - albeit paying him more actually lowered PA's salary liability.
And that's why it's not really a Darius Miles situation. Kahn's courtship of Roy had zero impact on the team's plans in free agency and will have very little impact financially for the team even with the missing insurance because of the off-set and also because we won't be paying luxury tax.
Im finding the whole situation rather odd. The BRoy part is meh because if the wolves didnt sign him someone else would. The Martell Wester part is a littel whatever also, the "compensation" could easily be figured out later with some of PA's money. Im not sure what we are doing with Batum though, because it seems like we think $46m is to much for him but we dont want to let him walk for nothing. If we landed HIbbert than I'd say match Batum and don't look back, but now our direction is a little different. So a sign and trade seems like a good option, Minnys 1st round picks dont entice me though because they are probably going to be mid to late first round. D Williams seems like a good swap IMO. Makes me think DWill wasnt really made available or PA/Oshey just hates Kahn enough to mess with him even to our detriment. Maybe our plan is to match Batum then trade him later?
I think you're overlooking Paul Allen's role in this. he tends to react emotionally to these kinds of situations rather than logically. If somebody tries to bully him monetarily he seems to be the kind of guy who will waste a lot of money and do some really dumb things just to make a point.
Thats what Im affraid of, but I would like to think that since there is a cap thats its not just about pissing money away to prove a point since it could negativly affect our teams growth. Here is to hopeing that there is a crafty plan in place.
