Whatever happened to the dunk contest. It used to be the fan favorite event of All Star weekend. Back in the early days you had guys competing in it like Dr. J, Jordan, and David Thompson. Then in the 90's you had guys like Isiah Rider, Kobe, and ever since 200 nothing exciting has happened when VC put on an absolute show for the fans. The one that many thought would ressurect the dunk contest Jason Richardson has now backed out of this contest because he doesn't want to be known as only a dunker. Is it that they don't give the winner enough money? If they want to appeal to the fans why not get in the dunk contest. Sadly now we have guys like Chris Anderson thinking that he's the NBA's Eminem and taking like 8 attempts at a single dunk, but this year I think the ressurection of the dunk contest has started with Josh Smith. Hopefully he will draw the big name guys like VC, T Mac, and Kobe back into the contest, but as of now this is still the least entertaining part of the All Star weekend.

But will that be enough to attract the big names such as Kobe, T-Mac and so on? I say no. The way I see it, it seems as if the Dunk Contest is only appealing for the young and upcoming stars that wants to make an early name for themselves and just showcase they?re amazing athletic ability. With the perennial All-Stars such as Kobe, T-Mac and Vince I believe that they think they're too good for it and they may leave those events in the hands of the young guys. The NBA could put up 1 mil as the prize money for all I know but I doubt even that wil convince them to take part in the event. They're already millionaires and a mere 1 million is pocket change to them. But just because the mainstream guys probably won't take part in these contests, that doesn?t' necessarily mean the event won't ever reach it's once so elite status. Guys like Josh Smith, J.R Smith, Jason Richardson, LeBron James (?), Andr? Iguodala and so on will revive this event, I?m sure of it.
In an interview with Carter, he said that if he ever gets 100% healthy he would come back and do another dunk contest. Carter also said that he has a few things that nobody has ever done before, but who doesn't say that we have all heard it before. The dunk contest is being brought back to life some, all I have to say is Andre Iguodala better be in the next one, and LeBron better not wait till the last minute to decide next year.
u know what the NBA should do?? have a one nighter!!! meaning gather the big "names" and the "games" and have em do their best 5 dunks!! that's right 5. Have one evening just for that!! no 3point, skills challenge, rookie vs soph crap that nite. Just dunks! participants!! well IMO... these are the guys i wanna see against each other 1) Kobe 2)Carter 3)Richardson 4) T-Mac 5) Francis 6) Josh Smith 7) Desmond Mason 8)???? anyone else that i might've forgotten.. but these guyz i def wanna see at one time!
don't worry, the dunk contest should be rivived next season, long as we get amare to dunk again, we get lebron, and we get iguadala. also, if josh smith comes back. that would be a great contest.
I think the problem is just nobody knows who the likes of players such as Josh Smith, JR Smith, or Jason Richardson are. They have no clue they are excellent dunkers so they just ignore the contest. Or maybe the NBA should add some kind of obstacle or a stunt to make the competiton harder and more exciting. Purepoint- I`d get rid of your whole signature column if I were you.
how's that??? i have a feelin it's still too big.. how do i make it smaller?? all i did was link it.. how do i change the size?
The dunk contest needs to go away for awhile.Over the past few years we've seen dunks that are SO crazy that it seems like people are desensitized to it.If the crowd cant get up for a behind the back dunk like JR Smith threw down then theres obviously a problem.Add that with guys that shouldnt be in the contest like Chris Anderson who annoy everyone watching by attempting a so so dunk about a dozen times before its over. The contest needs to go away for a few years for sure.
I disagree. The Dunk Contest is the second most exciting event next to the All-Star game or, the contest could even be tied as most exciting. If it were to go away, excitement and hype could go way down and just like kill All-Star weekend.
