Tonight I went to an event (work related) that turned into a political conversation where one person who was far left and one who was far right were both arguing that they believed that America was terminal and wouldn't be around in 15 years. Everyone else, about a dozen of us, felt that America would keep on ticking and find it's course. Basically the person on the right and left both felt that things in America were untenable and that the citizens had already lost confidence in the USA and things would come crashing down hard soon. I stayed out of the fray for the most part but I did find it interesting. Both the right and left antagonists pointed to the current election as evidence that the American people were sick and tired of the politicians and the people who were crafting policy. Personally, I think that the fact that Bernie and Donald are doing so well is evidence that in the end the current structure is working, that the people have the power and will change things over time. But I'm really not confident in that assessment. I'm not sure I see how the American people would actually revolt, considering we are doing too well economically, socially, and globally as a whole. But it is an interesting topic so I thought I would bring it here for dissection.
Live long enough, and you realize there are always people like that on the fringes, thinking the end is nigh. The only real change in modern times is that now I get to argue with them on S2. barfo
Bernie and Trump. Clearly Citizens United has made it so only the guys with super PACs with hundresds of $millions can get elected, somehow free speech subverting elections. Ask Jeb how that worked out. Hillary may have fewer popular votes than Sanders, yet undemocratically is drubbing him in the delegate count. I don't think the end is nigh, just that Orwell's vision of left wing society is coming to pass.
People today are no where near being sick and tired of the politicians as they were back in the late 1960’s and early 70’s. We are still here, the process grinds on because the silent majority rule, not the fringe radicals with their scare tactics. There are parts of our governmental process that are broken, other parts of the process that are being abused, on all levels of government. Just more business as usual. I am very concerned over the destructive riots started by disappointed immature sports fans. I am far less concerned with civil unrest protests started by people that do not agree with a political process.
You just hear more of the bullshit now because of social media. But I wouldnt say things have changed that drastically. Millenials are a bunch of wusses anyways. They give up after fighting for something in a week or two if they don't see immediate change. They are the microwave generation.
Ugh you mean I can't download an App to do my work for me? What?!?! I can't get rich quick? WTF I have to actually GO into work? WTF IS THIS? BERRRRRNNIIIEEEEE!!! MAKE THEM PLAY FAIR!
Instead of that, argue over a more reasonable scenario: In 20 years, China and the U.S. will be in a "tie," economically and militarily.
Superpowers don't collapse, they fade away, or morph into something else. Anyone who thinks that the USA is just going to collapse at some point in the near future is watching too much Alex Jones or RT. Chicken Little: Oh nooo, the BRICS nations are going to buy oil in Yuan to kill the Petrol Dollar and collapse the USA!!! Buy gold!!!
I see countries in the future becoming smaller, not larger...China and the US are prime candidates for splitting up into different countries. The US is definitely not unified politically at all right now, nor is China. Capitals are too far removed from outlying areas..and concerns.
