I saw this when it was aired on TV and finally got around to looking for it online. This pretty much describes me to the T and gave me an excuse to being the way I am . HERE COME THE MILLENNIALS - They are in their late teens to early twenties and have been coddled by their parents to the point of being ill prepared for a demanding workplace. I'm always interested to hear what people think of my generation. I think we are a lot different but its not gonna be a huge change in the workforce as far as whiny, lazy, or whatever people go. There's always hard workers, people who are incompetent, grinders, brilliant lazy asses, leaders, followers, etc. etc. I don't think that will change much. This generation definitely doesn't have loyalty to its employer though (and I agree with it). I thought it was funny when they were talking about how this new generation values friends, family, and lifestyle above its occupation and the interviewer asked the two young guys if they agreed and they agreed adamantly. I agree adamantly too but I recognize how the creators of this program intended for that to be a surprise to their target viewers (from previous generations). They mentioned how their parents "sacrificed for the company" and then got laid off and now they want to just do whats best for them and yet it seems like the older generation thinks this is a bad thing. Why the hell should I take less money, have to work overtime, or make any other "sacrifice" for the company when I know they don't give a fuck about me? Its bad that I value myself, my family and friends over my employer? Its not my fault you did a bunch of extra work with zero extra benefits because you were worried what society would think of you. I'm 100% biased out the ass but I think my generation is the most informed (due to the internet and other factors) and best educated. I'd agree that its also probably the most "coddled" as well but I think for the most part everyone is hit by reality at some point. I guess its a bad thing that I value relationships and my own life above some company that's going to fire my ass the moment some new kid fresh out of college applies for a job at half the salary.
I qualify for Generation Y aka the Echo Generation and I tend to agree with the overall message in the program. Work fuels your lifestyle, it doesn't define your person. I know a lot of people who have work-a-day jobs who have just the slightest amount of interest in what they do from 8-5, whether they have "good" jobs or mundane ones. One thing I don't think this special feature focused on is that the older members of this caste are already becoming their own managers by creating their own job descriptions. The volume of innovation coming into the workplace at the moment is overwhelming. As factories are being shut down and punch card jobs sent overseas I think the Western economy is making a transition that is going to change everybody's lifestyle.
meh - I was born in '81 and have character traits more comminly associated with Generatio X. We're slackers but not because our parents coddled us - but because we haven't been inspired to work that hard. Plus I look at kids these day and want to smack most of them - ok I only want to smack Master King Snake.
