Is it just me or does anyone else think Gilbert Arenas is the most mentally weak player in the NBA?

Poor guy, it seems everytime he's in the big stage he loses composure. The bust All-Star games, LeBron walking over to him and telling him he's gonna miss the most critical FTs in his career. Now that he's in the big stage on the World Championship it seems like he's getting in a fetal position again and just fading away. Right now, Arenas and Bowen are the most likely to be cut and I doubt most people would rather have Hinrich, Battier, Melo, Miller, Jamison, etc over a superstar in Gilbert Arenas. His minutes are going down and he looks like he has no confidence out there whatsoever.

He's also very superstitious, like he has no self confidence in his own ability and believe that his fate is dependent on a higher power.

Not at all if anything Arenas is one of the most confident people in the NBA he never questions his ability or thinks twice about taking a big shot. Anyone remember two seasons ago in the Bulls/Wizards playoff series where he hit the game/series winner on a fade away jumper? Broke my heart but he has skill. As far as mentally weak players go to me Kwame Brown, Tim Thomas, and Darius Miles come to mind.

If that's how you feel, I pity you. You know nothing about Arenas, his game, or how he lives his life, obviously.. He's always been a superstitious guy, but he's always been one of the most confident players out there. If you think he's more mentally weak than Ron Artest, you might want to start watching some tapes.

Did you not forget the big shots Arenas hit in that game? Nobody remembers them because the Wizards lost on two free throws. Why don't you call LeBron mentally weak? He used to suck in the clutch, putting it nicely. Arenas, on the other hand, is a pretty damn clutch player. Everybody misses clutch shots though.

I would say Stromile isn't as much mentally weak as he is just...dumb. Dunleavy gets knocked off his game when the least bit of pressure is put on him.

He's so mentally weak that he scores 29 PPG, puts in more work than most of the guys in the league, and is one of the most clutch guys in the league. He's so mentally weak that he went from being a second round pick to being one of the best players in the NBA. He's so mentally weak that he went from being told he wouldn't play any minutes in college to what he is now. I mean let's just ignore that he hit a what, 30 foot three to take that game into overtime in the first place. Let's ignore that in 04-05 he had a game winner on a play which was supposed to be set up for Larry Hughes because Gil was having an awful night, yet he knew he was going to take the shot the whole time. Yea, that's mental weakness right there, one dumb example overshadows every other thing he's ever done. I guess Bosh is also mentally weak because he hasn't been playing well for team USA.

First of all, this isn't something we can truly measure. The only guy I could think of is Brevin Knight because I remember Payton made him cry, but can't think of anyone else.

I like Wade, but let's not forget that he missed two free throws with 10 seconds left in Game 6 against the Mavs. Those are even bigger FT's than Arenas, this is the NBA FInals we're talking about. Now his team won, so no one says anything, but if they had lost does that now mean Wade is mentally weak [IMG]

Props to Arenas for his long range 3 shot but when letting LeBron go over there and tell him that only to miss the FTs was like "wow". Mind you he's an 80% ft shooter. Even Shaq made clutch FTs in Game 3 of the NBA Finals, in a series where he couldn't hit a FT to save his life.

<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">Why don't you call LeBron mentally weak? In his case it's because he's been hyped up as the saviour of the NBA.

How does fading away in the All-Star game mean anything? It's a pointless game.

Not even Kobe Bryant will ever have a playoff performance like Wade did in that series (let alone Finals) so I don't know why you bring that up.

What does that have to do with anything? I didn't say he missed the ones before. Arenas also hit previous FT's, he also hit a three to take the game into OT. That doesn't take away the fact that Wade missed two FT's when all he needed was one to ice the game. A made Jason Terry three and the series could've been a whole different story, just because Arenas got unlucky with Damon Jones having his 3 seconds of fame doesn't make it any worse.

Like I said, Arenas won the Chicago series in 04-05 on a game winner that wasn't designed for him, in a game where he was playing horrible. Yea, mental weakness right there. When asked who would take the last shot on team USA, he said ME, whether or not the coach would actually run the play for him, that does not support you claim at all. Yea, he's real weak.

Oh alright, I do know he's high maintenance though, he misses games for every little thing. I guess Kwame is an option, he's more just dumb than really mentally weak.

No, I wasn't questioning your argument just on that point. I just don't think a performance at the All-Star game tells anything. T-Mac had an impressive statline, but was I impressed by it? Of course not, because his teammates just fed him the ball, since the game was in his homecity. The same thing applies with Lebron's MVP, which only came because he dominated the ball at all times. The only meaning in the All-Star game is in the selections, and even those are somewhat diminished with the fan voting.

Also, I don't think he might get cut over Shane Battier, because he's shown to be a weaker player. Battier came in as a defensive specialist, who could fill specific needs of the team. Arenas came in as a scorer/playmaker that had to really make himself stand out to make any noise. If he's cut, it won't be over a player like Battier. It would be over players like Billups, Wade, and Paul.

...or Ben Wallace, or Pau Gasol, and I don't remember the All-Star game that Arenas didn't score in. He's only been in two of them, and I remember him scoring in both.

Stephon Marbury. The guy shouldv'e won a championship by now, with Minnesota or another team. Has arguably the biggest talent in the NBA, but has zero basketball IQ. I welcome anyone who disagrees, though..

Anyone who has followed the Raptors will agree without a doubt that Hoffa is up there (Jazz fans will find out soon too). He couldn't handle any critism from the media or any booing from the stands. He's my pick out of all the players in the league, as for star players it's gotta be Ron Ron. If anyone disagrees see the incident on November 19, 2004.
