I'm come from a patriotic family but is it really necessary to have it at every single sporting event? It's not like we're playing a team from Europe, China, ect. I may be overreacting, but it's annoying and somewhat cheezy.
I hate hearing the national anthem at every sporting event. I think the anthem should only be sung at special events, but if it was sung only at special events would everyone know the words when the time came?
I've never really given it much thought. I like the tradition of it and the way it seems to act as a few minutes of peace before the contest where we all stand united. I think I'd vote to keep it.
It's a message that there's something bigger that unites us before the sporting event that divides the two teams.
I wouldn't mind it if it was a decent song, but it is kind of screechy, especially as performed in stadiums. I enjoy instrumental versions though. Someone played it on a sax at a blazer game, I thought that was great. barfo
Does it matter what kind of instrument? I "saw" this guy at a blazers game a few years back... <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/1l5qH1_XQDE&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/1l5qH1_XQDE&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>
Actually I recently went to an event that did NOT have the anthem ever. When I went to UFC 87 they didn't play it once. Kind of surprised me a little, I think it was the first time I was at a event that didn't have one.
What I hate about the National Anthem at events is the lame attempts by singers to put their own spin on it.
