There is always a danger of falling into the "generalisation" issue, but it seems to me that the average neutral football fan supports two teams: their own team and whoever is playing against Chelsea. Over the last few years, as Roman's money has filtered into the game, Chelsea have moved from being a team that entertains into a team that bores. Worse, an air of "tackiness" now surrounds Chelsea. Nobody likes to see money used to "buy" success indiscriminately, but it is even worse when that money is used to create a team that bores most footballing fans rigid. It is now more and more commonplace to hear the "old" Chelsea supporter claim that he no longer enjoys supporting Chelsea. It seems to me that Chelsea have become one of the most reviled teams in England. The question is why? During the 1970s, when Liverpool swept away virtually everyone in their wake, Liverpool were not reviled. They dominated the game, but were not reviled. Likewise, Manchester United and Arsenal essentially dominated the 1990s, but neither created the distaste amongst the neutrals that the current Chelsea team provide. It would be really useful to hear opinions from neutrals on why they believe Chelsea have become so unpopular.
Simple: it's a combination of (1)supporters only having room in their hearts for their team and (2) Jose Mourinho. I think that you are a little mis-guided in saying that neutrals didn't "hate" either Man u's or Arsenal's dominance in the 90's. it's just that Chelsea are Public Enemy no.1 at the mo, making it hard to remember the jealousy-filled eras of "disliking" Man Utd / Arsenal...
I think TONE goes a little far but to be honest I do think that is a massive reason as to people's dislike. Jose tries to win games off the pitch with a lot of petty comments and essentially tries to protect his players from actually having to play good football. The man is undoubtedly a gifted manager and i think he could create a better and more entertaining team if the money had been a little more restrcited. the fact is that players like ballack and schevie have gone to chelsea and just got caught up in the "we dont have to play, we can just collect our pay cheque"
The fact that they have bought (by outbidding) so many talented players and let them sit on the bench week in and weekout dosn't go down well with fans whoose teams had been after the same players.
I dont like Chelsea and im classed as a neutral fan I guess... The fact is there like Englands Rangers, SCUM!
Theres no doubting that Chelsea are a great team and anyone who disagrees simply doesn't know football. But besides the cheque book Jose Mourinho is quite simply embarrassing. When he came over here i thought he was a breath of fresh air with his wit and his laid back style but since then the not so special ones arrogance as become pathetic. Why can't he ever give credit to a team that as took points off him. Okay when Chelsea play the likes of Huddersfield in the cup he gushes about them and has nothing bad to say. But when a rival from a big team gets one over on him he makes himself and worse still Chelsea football club look pathetic. Surely by now even some of his own teams fans must shake their heads with disbelief at some of the things that leave his mouth. There is no doubt he is a good manager but he won't get real credit for it because of the cheque book behind him. Other than that Man Ure will always be hated by many fans because of the quite simply shocking decisions that they seem to get in their favour. It also makes me laugh when i hear them calling Chelsea's buying of players, they've been spending like that for years. I don't think Arsenal ever had the hatred you speak of because apart from Arsends short sightedness i don't think he's ruffled anyones feathers apart from Red noses. And Liverpool was hated in the 70's and 80's.
That's a good insentive from a scouser, even though your feelings for "Manure" is bullshit. It's the refs decision not the players or the club, i think its Liverpool that get most "so called help" from refs, keep an eye out, you might learn summit

It is so ridiculous its actually laughable at times(but not for the club it goes against)
