What is the Memex? To put it simply, it is basically just an idea by Dr. Vannevar Bush. <div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">He introduced the concept of what he called the memex in the 1930s, a microfilm-based "device in which an individual stores all his books, records, and communications, and which is mechanized so that it may be consulted with exceeding speed and flexibility." After thinking about the potential of augmented memory for several years, Bush set out his thoughts at length in the essay "As We May Think" in the Atlantic Monthly which is described as having been written in 1936 ... Bush predicted that "Wholly new forms of encyclopedias will appear, ready made with a mesh of associative trails running through them, ready to be dropped into the memex and there amplified." A few months later (10 September 1945) Life magazine published a condensed version of "As We May Think," accompanied by several illustrations showing the possible appearance of a memex machine and its companion devices. This version of the essay was subsequently read by both Ted Nelson and Douglas Engelbart, and was a factor in their independent formulations of the various ideas that became hypertext. ... The memex is still an important accomplishment, because it directly inspired the development of hypertext technology.</div>The idea of the memex was the pioneering concept of the World Wide Web. And in the recent years, the introduction of Wikipedia has further facilitated our access to quality information. Would it still be possible for such a device to be created? A device which contains all the information in the world such that you don't need to go to school to learn anything... Or what do you think the next greatest invention will be?
the greatest invention in the world will lead to the downfall of the human civilization as we know it. look at this way: once the Memex has been released it would probably be very expensive, then the only people who would be able to get it would be the rich people. now of course some pirated versions would be released thus causing the loss of jobs of billions of teachers around the globe now of course the pirated version would never be as good as the original making the rich people smarter which gives them the knowledge to maybe create/invent something... further increasing their wealth. thus when their wealth increases they can buy great number of stocks and maybe able to own major corporations (if they dont already have one). thus monopolizing the makets... making them only richer and the poor only poorer (is this even a word?) now the population becomes smaller because of the severe hunger due to the monopolizing of the markets and obviously they wont be able to land a decent job because of their lack of education due to the removal of the teaching profession... soon the population would only consist of rich, snobby kids trying to outdo each other. the world would reach a state of chaos where people would kill for just a loaf of bread now these rich snobby kids cant re-populate the world so the population further decreases till it reaches the point in where the human race would be driven to extinction. nahhh... im just kidding (or am i?) the Memex is a cool invention
