wow <div class="quote_poster">Quoting bender:</div><div class="quote_post">Read this nice article by Brook Larmer (Time Magazine). Finally, Yi Jianlian has been "discovered". </div> Im sick of tall chinese guys who wont be any good. Like this guy.
<div class="quote_poster">Quoting beasly3:</div><div class="quote_post">Im sick of tall chinese guys who wont be any good. Like this guy.</div> You don't think Yao Ming is good? Good find bender. I think it is great the NBA scouts international players and imports new talent to the NBA. The players have better fundamentals and are quickly catching up to the skill and size level of US players.
WOW! Where did all these tall asians come out all of the sudden! They are usually short! O well, i wanna see if he is that good or not! Is he going into the draft next yr.
<div class="quote_poster">Quoting beasly3:</div><div class="quote_post">Im sick of tall chinese guys who wont be any good. Like this guy.</div> You'd better get used to this guy, he's the real deal. Athletic 7-footers like him don't come around every day. He's only 15 now, but he literally dominates players who are 4 years older than him (as he did at the U19 World Championships - Yi was among the top scorers and rebounds). Imagine how good he'll be at the age of 18, when he'll enter the Draft. He's a lock for the First Pick overall in 2006, just like Nemanja Aleksandrov is for the Draft in 2005.
<div class="quote_poster">Quoting sportsrock37:</div><div class="quote_post">he sounds good. you never know though. how many 7 foot athletic chinese guys do you know?? not many.</div> How many 7 foot athletic Nigerian guys did you know before Hakeem Olajuwon? How many 7 foot athletic Spanish guys did you know before Pau Gasol? Yi Jianlian is definitely an athletic freak. How many sevenfooters are able to dunk 360s, or to dunk from the free-throw line?

People are very quick to assume Yi Jian Lian is going to be a bust like Wang Zhi Zhi or Bateer. You have to realize China along with other international countries have been studying and implementing NBA practices and workouts over the last few years. The eye opener of how quick other countries are catching up to us was in last year's World Championships. The heavily favored US team was sent home packing with their heads low and in utter shock. Yi Jian Lian will have tremendous support from the NBA, sports agents, and other professionals in the NBA sports discipline to maximize his talent. He is very coordinated and will likely be groomed to be a better player than Yao Ming. He is more athletic than Ming, but does not quiet have the soft touch Yao has. However he is only 15 and will have more professional experience playing in Club leagues and on China's International team, than any 15 year old in the U.S. The bottomline, don't be so quick to stereotype International players and learn to step outside the box and analyze his game to the entire NBA spectrum of players and not just "Another 7 foot Asian player."
The only thing we'll have to worried about is when he'll be allowed to enter the NBA Draft. You know, the Chinese government didn't allow Yao Ming to enter till he was 22. Imagine they'd do the same with Yi Jianlian, we would have to wait till 2010 for him... BTW: Here's a nice profile on him.
hopefully they dont' do the same again. the chinese gov should let him out when he's eligible, but they probably won't.
Just found this article on Yi. "China?s ?heavy artillery? wears number 14, and has many scouts interested in him, who have come to Thessaloniki and to the World Championship in quest of talents. According to the American scout Mark Crow, the Chinese giant is expected to be drafted by the NBA in a two years and that?s why a lot of eyes are fixed on the said player. Yi Jianlian was born in 1987, is 2.12 m. tall and plays the power forward position, while during the next couple of years he will be at his home country and with the Guantong team, where he will be playing under close scrutiny?."
stereotypes..ignorant <div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">WOW! Where did all these tall asians come out all of the sudden! They are usually short! THe Asians you probably see are the geeky ones on college campuses. Those are the ones who can study abroad in the US due to their families "rich" background. Trust me bro, the Chinese in northern China are tall (like where Yao came from). Even Koreans can be towering giants. I hope Ha could be the first Korean (foreign) player in the NBA.
He's the next yao ming because he's tall...Thats gay. I dont care about this, because 1 of every 4 chineese players make it.
Why was this thread even started? Yao Ming isn't even established a center yet, so why are we discussing his potential predecessor? What exactly defines the "next Yao Ming"? The next tall asian center who receives more hype than he deserves? The next guy to make it to the ASG, who doesn't deserve to be there? The next first pick overall to get outplayed by the next ninth pick overall (Amare)? The next Yao Ming? Puhleeeeze!!
<div class="quote_poster">Quoting Riot_Starter:</div><div class="quote_post">The next tall asian center who receives more hype than he deserves?</div> Let's talk about the "amount of hype" Yi Jianlian deserves. You have a 15 yr old 7-footer, who's top-10 in scoring and rebounding in a tournament for 19 yr old (Junior World Championships). You have a 15 yr old (I've got to repeat it, 'cause that's the scary part) who scored 26 points on the 18 yr old 1st round prospect Ha Seung-Jin in the first half. You have a 15 yr old who was among the best 5 of the 2002 ABCD-Camp. And you don't think he's worth the hype?
Chinese are not short. <div class="quote_poster">Quoting kb8gw32003:</div><div class="quote_post">WOW! Where did all these tall asians come out all of the sudden! They are usually short! I visited China once in 1996. I've never been to Europe so I can't say for sure, but if Chinese are short, then the Americans are little midgets. I know in movies, Chinese are often short, but in reality, from what I've seen, Americans are by far shorter.
