In my opinion, the Lions picked the best player in the draft. Possibly the best WR prospect in decades. I don't care if they drafted 3 other WR's in past seasons, it's about now. Sure the Lions have needs at DE/OL/CB/S. Those are all fillable in later rounds. In my opinion you generally draft for need, unless the player at your feet is so incredable you have to get him, this is what I believe the Lions did, and they made a great move. Next year there will be QB's available, a DE of Gaines Adams ability. But how often do Calvin Johnson type WR's come along? There's never been a WR of Johnson's size, speed, skills, EVER. Calvin Johnson could very well be the best WR in the league in a couple seasons, based on his awesome potential. How can you fault the Lions for picking him? What, because they have a whole at DE or OL? Those are all fillable in later rounds. QB? They have Jon Kitna who they can ride out for another season and they can simply address the QB situation next year. I will never doubt the Lions for this pick. Calvin Johnson is special.

He is the best player in this draft. He has everything. He is amazing to watch. He is built to, great size. There shouldnt have been a reason if Lions passed him by

He is the best player in the draft, but with a sh*tty QB he isn't going to be effective. if the Lions can land someone like John Beck in the second round, than Johnson will become even more effective.

I guess when looking at what they need, Johnson wasn't their first option. But teamed up with Roy Williams and offensive coordinator Mike Martz, Johnson will be able to be a top-notch reciever within the year. Kitna is a little rusty, but he is a nice for CJ to catch balls from. If Detroit picks up QB Drew Stanton in the second round, they would have three different QBs to go to. This was a huge pickup for the Lions. :happy0144:

I usually think that you need to draft by need, but I had no problem with this like I said in the Draft Thread. When you have a talent like this still on the board when it's your turn, you really can't pass it up.

I agree.Calvin Johnson is the best WR prospect we've seen in a long time and certainly the best available prospect after JaMarcus Russell was taken. I don't think it was a bad pick at all. This guy's going to be an immediate star, and he and Roy Williams will make the best recieving tandem in the NFL in 3 years from now.The Lions obviously still have to improve their defense and offensive line, but I don't think you should pass on a guy like Calvin Johnson.

Why does a team like Detroit get guys like Barry Sanders and Calvin Johnson? They're fu*kin idiotsIf you can't protect your QB and you don't have a good enough QB to get him the ball then he's not gonna put up the numbers people will expect him to...

Roy Williams put up big numbers last year in that offense. Johnson will contribute, the Lions running attack has been vastly improved as well with Ducket/Bell.

He caught like 90 balls and was re-signed in the offseason. Now Kitna has three targets to look at, and three different RBs to hand it off to. Also they have decent young QBs behind Kitna to groom within Martz's system. I still don't know about their D, but I guess they have plenty of picks left. Johnson will be successful here.

Well, considering we suck every year, doesn't that mean we'll have a good chance at getting a great player every year? Oh wait, I forgot we had Millen. And don't we need to get the Barry Sanders And Calvin Johnsons to even out the Joey Harringtons, Mike Williams, Charles Rogers, etc.

I'm pissed that the Lions only got a fourth round pick for Mike Williams and Josh McCown.Detroit drafted Drew Stanton, he's a stud.Nice writeup BCB.
