The Rangers are telling teams that they won’t trade Dan Girardi and will sign him

The Rangers are telling teams that they are not going to move Dan Girardi and are focused on signing him to a contract extension. (Pierre LeBrun on TSN)

On Ryan Callahan, LeBrun says that those negotiations are maybe not as far done the road as Girardi’s and he isn’t sure that the team can get both players signed but Girardi seems more likely.

 

I actually think this is smart. I know some are down on Girardi, but he is very important to this team, and plays a huge role for us.

If we can re-sign him for 4 years at 5 mill per +/- I would be onboard with that. I wouldn't go over low 5's per. And I certainly wouldn't do close to 6 mill per.

But if Girardi is fair and really wants to stay a Ranger and would take around 5 mill per +/- for 4 or 5 years, I would do that and be happy.

 

On Cally I really think it comes down to asking price. He has not had a great season. But he is our captain and leader and grew up with us. To me that is worth something. If he would take a fair deal with a cap hit in the mid 4's +/- I would do that.

If he is looking at 5 or more per, I would have to say no. I really wouldn't go more than 4.5 or 4.6 per for Cally, and even that may be 300 K or so high, but I would give him that little extra as our captain and leader. If he wants more, and can get it, more power to him. Let him get that money somewhere else IMO.

 

If not New York, he will get his asking price somewhere.

 

Lastly on the team right now I will say this. I think a scoring winger and a physical dman could really take this team to another level. If we can add those two players I think it would be huge. I have been impressed with their play the last few games.

I think we clearly need another scoring winger and a physical presence on D to really be legit in terms of making a cup run, but I have been very impressed with their play recently I must admit.

 

Very possible/likely Cally will, but if he does so be it. We move on. We make a fair offer in the mid 4's per. If he wants to make 5 mill plus per, then all good go get that somewhere. No hard feelings.

 

While I think Callahan is good (maybe very good), I also think he is replaceable. Just my opinion ...

 

I agree jam. That is pretty much my point also. I think Girardi would be much more difficult to replace than Cally. That is why I would go into the low 5's to re-sign Girardi if need be.

 

I think a veteran goal scorer would do wonders for this team. Not just for the ice time, but also as a presence for some of the younger guys who have trouble finding the net.

 

I have to admit, the defense has been playing SO MUCH BETTER than earlier in the year ... all of them.

 

Girardi deserves a lot of credit because he didn't look like he had a clue how to play this system. He's adjusted well the past 15 games. If his salary request is reasonable, I would keep him over Callahan. I would also keep Brassard. He's crucial on our PP and he's also picked it up now. Callahan doesn't look like he fits at all. He's not a good PP guy and shouldn't play there. He looks very slow compared to many of our forwards. I think he could bring a first, second and NHL ready prospect at the deadline.

 

Here's the thing dump, if we are in it and heading to the playoffs I see no shot they deal away the captain and leader at the trade DL.

I think it would be a bold move if you think re-signing him this summer will be a tough thing to do, but I cannot see us dealing him as we prepare to head into the playoffs. And I for sure 100% don't see us dealing him for picks down the line as we prepare to head into the playoffs. If they even thought about dealing him it would be for a player that would help right now as we move into the playoffs.

You really think Sather says okay we are in the playoffs, or right there battling for the playoffs, let me trade my captain for picks. NO SHOT dump. You know that.

 

I can't see the Rangers resigning Girardi during this season unless they throw a ridiculous ($6 mil per?) offer his way unless Dan loves NY so much he is willing to take a pay cut. Dan's agent would advise him to wait for offers from other teams in the offseason before committing to the Rangers. Free agent dmen less talented than Girardi have been handsomely rewarded the last few years, teams starved for defense will easily throw a solid dman like Girardi big money.

 

IMO, Callahan has had very little to do with this winning streak. So, I don't think Sather is tied to him.

 

I agree with you on Cally's impact on the winning play recently, but I don't think that is the point. If you think we'll be heading into the playoffs, or right there battling for a solid spot, and Sather will then turn around and deal the captain at the DL for picks/prospects we simply agree to disagree.

I see no way that happens. Sather won't deal Cally at the DL with us heading into the playoffs unless he gets back another proven legit solid player, and even then it is very iffy he would deal our captain in season when we are playoff bound.

 

That depends if he thinks he will lose him for nothing. I doubt he will do that.

 

I think in that situation he would either:

1. Take his chances that he can sign him before July OR that he can trade his rights for something before July.
2. He would MAYBE then try to trade him before the DL, but not for picks/prospects. He would try and deal him for another proven legit player that he could simply plug right in for Cally.

No shot we are heading into the playoffs and he flips Cally for picks/prospects. Unless we have some second deal worked out to add back what we lose in Cally (remember he is an important PK guy as well).

 

Callahan for Etem and the Ducks number 1.

 

Callahan will not be traded at the deadline, unless the Rangers are out of it. Lets not forget he was injured for a long stretch, and like everybody else, is just beginning to understand this system; and he could have a big say on just how far the Rangers go. While Callahan hasn't been great, he has been solid. What kind of a message are you sending the team (as well as the fans), when you trade away the captain, a team leader and fan favorite for question marks? For Callahan to be traded, Sather would have to be completely blown away by what he would be getting in return, and that rarely happens at the deadline. Teams that are out of it, are usually dumping salary, and would rather take some younger players or draft picks.

 

I think Callahan is a low priority for Glen and agree there's no way he gets traded. The Rangers are going to the playoffs, no way they trade their Captain. Glen can wait and see what other teams offer Ryan in the offseason and use them as a barometer to whether he's keepable. Callahan is undersized but has been asked to play like a bigger guy the last few years so he may need a little more time to adjust to AV's style.
