After watching several weeks of football and some reruns during the week, I think the top shelf teams right now are, in order: 1) Alabama 2) Oklahoma 3) Wisconsin 4) LSU 5) Stanford UO would be in the next level along with about 12 other teams at this point in time. But this will change as the season goes along.
"The" top teams or your top teams? J/K. Calm down... Is it my imagination or did you drop LSU one notch? Why? They drummed a decent Kentucky by 28 pts and held K to 155 total yards - LOL. K didn't score until late in the 4th (5:05) on LSU's 2's/3's. If we're comparing W/L of opponents defeated, LSU is in a class by itself. IMHO Bama def moved up after an impressive win at FL. But, I'd put them at #2. Both LSU and Bama have played three ranked opp with LSU being the only team to take down a top 5 team. Some question their offense but they have more TD's on the season than Bama. Bama would be my clear #2. The OK love stumps me. Tulsa, Missouri and Ball St? LOL. But still giving up 7 TD's and 350 yards per game? They've only played one ranked opp where LSU has played three. They give up 262 ypg. Despite playing teams with more losses than wins (where LSU opp have overwhelming wins vs losses) LSU has scored 10% more TD's than OK and clearly has a better D. Where's the logic? Wiskey is a strong, strong team, but again you're ranking a team who has played one ranked opp w/ wins over UNLV, Oregon St, N. Ill, and S. Dakota (LOL) above LSU? You see the strength of the teams W has played, but they are giving up the same amount of ypg as a team like LSU who is an entirely different league with SOS. I respect your rankings and like it. Just don't understand it. AP votes LSU (40), Ala (12) and OK (7) first place votes.
I'm not sure if LSU is better than Bama or not. But IMO there is no way I can rank Wisconsin or Oklahoma over them (not to say they arent good teams either) but that Defense is for real.
Agreed. People question LSU's offense, but they avg 38 pts a game and 350 yards. They also have one of the toughest schedules (they play FL next). 4 ranked teams in 6 games, and they have 3 more remaining on their schedule. 7 total. LSU is would be my clear #1 based on: wins, stats, defense, SOS. According to some, LSU has the #5 toughest schedule in the country, while Bama and OK are 24th and 25th. http://www.fbschedules.com/2011/06/phil-steele-2011-college-football-strength-of-schedule-rankings/
The defense is for real when they're getting turnovers. I'd like to see them play a good offense and not get any turnovers and see how they fare. I question if their offense is good enough to win a game absent of turnovers. On the other hand, if they continue to get turnovers each and every game, then I'll probably have to change my tune. I just don't know what to say, except that while a top shelf team, I see them pretty much as the worst of the best. But time will tell. I may be way out to lunch.
That's what mean. They're average starting position on the turnovers was OUR 29 yard line. Hell, we'd lose every game of the year if we played like that. I thought we moved the ball fairly well. We also had too many penalties (like those asinine leg whip calls) and we never got into our offense as a result. I know this is homerism, but take away 2 of the turnovers and we win. Take away 3 penalties that shouldn't have been called and we win going away. They simply didn't impress me that much either.
I hear ya. Holding LMJ to 52 yards, forcing 4 TO's and beating Oregon 40-27 with a backup QB just wasn't impressive. Since the Oregon game, LSU is only allowing (avg) 9 pts a game despite playing 2 out of 3 ranked teams. Obviously their offense is good enough to score more than 9 pts a game...they avg 38 a game.
I'd say at least three of those turnovers were just dumb execution on the Ducks part... not anything special that the Tigers did. Barner's fumble was just dumb, and DAT was just an inexperienced true freshman. He probably would have made those mistakes against anyone.
