This would be the biggest news of the week any other week but this one. According to MMAWeekly.com (aren't they MMA daily?), the UFC just had intense negotiations with Affliction. The crux of the discussed deal was the UFC allowing Affliction fight apparel back into the promotion in exchange for the end of Affliction MMA shows and the selling-off of select fighter contracts to the UFC. The two supposedly cooled off on the deal recently for a variety of chickenshit reasons. MMAWeekly suggests profanities were exchanged during their latest and final conference call on the matter. Odds are the death of EliteXC has had opposite affects on the two companies: Affliction may now recognize an opportunity to step into EXC's place on television, whereas the UFC may go by Dana's opinion and wait for them to go bankrupt. Affliction's second pay-per-view event, Day of Reckoning, was tentatively scheduled for 24 January 2008. The UFC has counterprogrammed the company again, clogging January with two UFC pay-per-view events (UFC 93: Franklin vs. Henderson on the 17th, and UFC 94: St. Pierre vs. Penn II on the 31st). Its very likely that the UFC will air something on the 24th as well, either an older PPV for free on Spike, or a thrown-together live show.

I was hoping Affliction would evolve into a legit company to compete with UFC long term to keep UFC innovative.
