George was surprised to see about 30 of the Mavs biggest fans -- all women -- who were quick to give him a personal greeting and welcome to the Metroplex.

Having just gotten in town, the new Maverick was just trying to put his shoes up at his locker in the back corner, then he planned to shoot some hoops downstairs on the practice court.

Instead, he pulled up a chair next to teammates Devin Harris and DeSagana Diop for a quick Q&A session with the women. He later was told they were all there as a part of the sixth annual NBA Basketball 101 for Women clinic at American Airlines Center.

"I didn't know what was going on," said George, who aborted his workout plans and rescheduled them for this morning. "Once I walked in, I thought it was going to be dark, and all of a sudden it's full of people.

"It makes you feel good when you come in and people welcome you with open arms."

More than 200 women took part in the clinic. Most were enthusiastic about last year's Western Conference championship -- but still not satisfied.

In small rotating groups, the women learned the basics of offense, defense and officiating, and they had sessions with the Mavs' trainers, their strength and conditioning coach and the broadcasters. But the highlight of the evening for most of the women was their time with the players.

"It gives us an insight into their everyday personality and not their on-court personality," said Pam Dowers of Arlington. Dowers and her daughter, Sarah, were dressed in matching pink and white Dirk Nowitzki jerseys and were attending the clinic for the second straight year.</div>
