The second wild card gives false hope. There's no way this team jumps both Texas and Baltimore. They simply don't do anything consistantly. Cano continues to disappoint when the offense needs him most.

I am extremely disappointed in Cano this year. I don't know if he is thinking of his contract or what but he is not as good as I hoped especially with all the injuries. I don't think this team makes the playoffs but part of me just doesn't want to have them give up and not make any moves. I am still hoping for a few moves and maybe they catch lightening in a bottle when Grandy comes back.

you would think that Cano would want to have a massive year so it helps his case with the contract, but it seems to be doing the opposite... as you both have said... such a disappointment...

Regarding the team being finished this year, I can't see Cashman pulling off enough trades to get this team what it needs to win... there isn't enough time left and there isn't enough chips to trade away for what little is out there... so yes, I do think this team is done... I hope and wish that isn't the case though

You forget Cleveland who are 3 games ahead of the Yankees also. For the first time I was angry with Girardi's decision to start Nix at third, and Stewart again. Stewart has given us all he has, but he is a AAAA player, the 3rd string catcher, and his throw plus Cano inability to come up with a decent hop led to the game being loss last night. Of course Girardi could have pinch hit last night for Stewart in the 8th but he stuck with this pile of shit.

...in Cano's defense, he has absolutely NO protection this year and he's not getting enough good pitches to hit. His number of BBs and IBBs illustrates that clearly.

...I will say one thing about Cano that really concerns me...the more that this Biogenisis things unravels, the more I'm afraid that Robbie may be "dirty" or may have been at one time. It appears that ARod "recruited" several players and referred them to Bosch. Cervelli, Montero have already been implicated and Cano's name popped up awhile back too. At the time, it was said that it was only an associate of Cano's, but I dunno.

Cano has one homer in the last 23 games.

I hope Cano is not dirty but at the same time I would not be shocked. His best friend Melky was and he hung around with Arod. I just pray his name in not in all this mess coming down in the next few days. I think that if it was it would have leaked by now.

They're not finished yet, but they're getting close, and that may be why we haven't heard much about a big trade, it's possible NY is debating on conceding this season, too many great teams that NY just cannot hang with this year, and with CC looking so bad it may be the wise choice, maybe get some decent picks and gear up for 2014 by letting the youth play, really blows but the injuries are just too great to overcome this year.

But Rusty who do you see as our starting position players next year?

It's a long season. No way you concede anything, especially with players returning. These role players who played over their heads early in the season just might be productive when they return to their roles as role players. A lot of baseball left.

One thing that this thread has me contemplating is whether the Yanks know something (in addition to Arod). If they know Cano is gone then that just might be enough for them to throw in the towel. If that's not the case then I expect some kind of move.

If Cano was in the investigation you can bet your ass that it would have been leaked. However with his group of friends (Arod & Melky) nothing would surprise me. And on another note Bern, I'm afraid I see this season differently. Of course you play it out, but this team his flawed in to many areas. CC is a major concern, along with any other near 40 year old. Watching Jeter run last night was sad. Granderson was back for 8 games and didn't look good then. We can't hit the ball out of the ballpark. IN the East, you have to be able to slug, plain and simple. Cano and Soriano will see 20+ with Cano seeing 30+ homers, and everyone else will be judy hitters. I wonder what the % is of having 4 singles in a single inning. That is what this offense is.

I will never give up 59, I just wish they would make a move today to show they are trying to compete. The Red Sox are killing them this year and it is sad to see.

I want them to win every game but I just don't see this team putting something together. Too much age and inconsistency.

...hey, how many of us gave this team any chance at all when the season began?...I think they've actually over-achieved considering everything.

...it's just been a terrible year, some of it was avoidable, some of it was not...everyone knows how stubborn I am, no way I ever give up.

There is a difference between giving up and dealing with the reality. Their are currently 8 teams, 9 if you count Kansas City fighting for 5 playoff spots. It is not giving up, but watching Stewart hack away every night and Nix and Overbay, does not give me any confidence that this team can overcome its problems. So no, I watch every game, I root like hell, I changed the channel at about 1:30 Am last night waiting for my beloved Yankees to pull it out knowing that every other team won last night. Give up, never! Address the issues, yes.

I have no clue, the Yankees may look like an entire new team in 2014, tons of moves are coming I think, what about you?

They are moves that have to happen, with the expiring contracts, of Hughes, Cano, and Grandy, this makes it very hard to know what the organization is thinking long term. Here is how I see it, Jeter will be 40, Suzuki will be 40 and Soriano will be 38 are signed for next year. Along with Wells who will be 35, and some want to bring Overbay back as a backup who would be 36, and then there is Arod, a drain on the contract dollars, and most likely serving some type of suspension. So to recap, if the Yankees carry 13 position players as they usually do, you have 5 players committed contractually who are old, slow and thus injury prone. So you resign Cano who will 31 along with Gardner who will be 30. that is 7 contracts and you still don't have a starting 3B and C. And what if ownership is locked into that magical 189 million figure. We lose Mo, and Andy, 2 more 40 year olds, CC's inning are maybe starting to show. In my opinion there isn't that one free agent that excites me, hopefully we could acquire McCann and others but there will be others teams wanting his services to.
