Warrior Fan Thoughts on losing The Custodian Was this a bad move on the Warriors part or were they smart enough not to overpay a guy that would have had limited minutes next year, assumming this club stays healthy? One thing I don't think other fans realize is that Cardinal put up good numbers because of all of the injuries on the Warriors. He got inflated minutes which led to his production. Don't get me wrong, Brian Cardinal had an incredible season and it is a great story but in all reality he would not have seen many minutes next year and would therefore not be as productive. His contract is for six years and worth roughly $39 million accordign to ESPN. That is a bit steep but this has been the common trend this offseason, overpaying free agents. btw- Sorry custodianrules2, this must be a sad day for you.
This is a sad day in Warrior land. I liked Cardinal's heart and hustle. Personally, I think he should have started over Dunleavy. Good luck Custodian. Congrats on the contract. I'm sorry we could not offer you what you needed.

Man, bummer. You knew it would happen though with Biedrens/Robinson/Murphy in the mix. BTW thx for the condolence. I hope we can sign another scrappy training camp invitee or maybe Biedrens can fill that void by diving for a loose ball or taking a charge. I guess I have to divide some time between here and the Memphis board so I can check out how Cardinal is doing. I am suprised he didn't go to Chicago instead because he is from Illinois and the bulls were his favorite team growing up.
I'm really happy that Cardinal got paid, and I'll root for him just like I rooted for Boykins last year. I think Cardinal can definately continue to put up the numbers he put up last year, but I don't think he'll put up any more. The question I have is whether that was worth the full MLE. In my book, it wasn't. Now the question I have is whether this is just a precursor to a GSW/Memphis trade? Memphis now has Wells, Miller, Jones, Cardinal, Battier, and Posey at sf/sg. I have to imagine a trade is in the works. I'm on record as saying there's little difference between Battier and Cardinal, so I could see him being involved in Damp trade (though I'm also VERY MUCH on the record as saying the Warriors can do a lot better than a Swift/Battier deal).
Yo walker, it was never about the numbers with Cardinal. It was about doing the dirty work that doesn't show up on the stat sheet. Diving for loose balls, tangling people up for a jump ball, taking charges, and just frustrating people with pressure defense and playing aggressive. If there was a statistic for how many extra posessions he got back for the Warriors he'd lead the team or tie with Speedy.

I'm very happy that Cardinal got it, but I'm also very happy that the Warriors weren't the ones to give it to him. Just consider this: Ron Artest is only making 5.8 mil this year, Maggette is making 6.1 mil, Redd is making 3 mil, and Harpring is making 4.5 mil. I think Cardinal has replaced Foyle as the most surprising contract of this offseason. I love Cardinal, but I wouldn't want the Warriors to be the ones that signed him to that deal.
Yeah you're right, I'm not in too much shock over this. The real big hope is that we can get to the playoffs for the first time since Cohan took over this once proud franchise. Also hope that Biedrens and Foyle become the "no fly zone" in the paint. I want to see Detroit pistons numbers in terms of blocks and rebounds. It'll be fun to watch. I've always enjoyed Foyle's high energy game and defensive attitude, especially when he comes out of nowhere to stop the other team's offense in transition SINGLE HANDEDLY.
"no fly zone" I like that a lot. So who do you think is going to be the "come out of nowhere" guy 3.0 or do you think that tradition ended with Musselman? A lot has been written about Lamizana, but the big knock on him is his lack of effort. Cisse is a big effort guy, and it'd be a nice story if he made the team, so he's the guy I'd like to see make it. But if we're just looking for a guy who has the same things in common with Boykins and Cardinal that they have with each other, I think Brandin Knight is the guy. He was a star in college, he's got a nice 3 point stroke, is a tenacious defender, and he has that "winner" quality. The more I think about it, the more the question changes from "can he do it?" to "how could he possibly not do it?" In fact, I'd like to offer my congratulations in advance to Knight on getting signed to a massive contract with another team about this time next year and, of course, for his surprisingly effective play for the Warriors this year (which was a godsend considering the injury Speedy suffered about a month into the season). In fact, we don't even really need to play the season, I've been struck with a bout of clairvoyance and can tell you exactly how the season went. Well, Knight filled in admirably for Speedy in the beginning of the year, but they were just hovering around .500. Then the team came out on fire after the allstar break and briefly moved into 6th in the West, but couldn?t keep it up and fell down to 8th. They managed to hold on to the 8th seed, before suffering a 4-1 first round knockout to the eventual NBA champs: your San Antonio Spurs. Was that over the top?

A HUGE step in the right direction.
Actually I predict we'll face off against the Grizzlies (first round playoffs that is). A little showdown against Cardinal and possibly Damp. I predict Damp will go where the money is though. I found the profile for Cisse http://www.nbadraft.net/profiles/ousmanecisse.htm Brandin Knight http://www.nbadraft.net/profiles/brandinknight.htm Herve http://www.nbadraft.net/profiles/hervelamizana.htm For those that are interested in our summer leaguers and possible new team members.
I love the highlights on Cisse's bio from his high school days: 1) He once blocked 17 shots in a game 2) He ran out to block a three point shot, got pump faked, and jump OVER the shooter, and there's supposed to be a picture of it. I'd love to get my hands on that thing.
Are you serious? He jumped over the guy? Damn. I only saw something like that when Vince Carter jumped over a guy in the olympics. http://img78.photobucket.com/albums/v292/c...inceolympic.gif Also here's more about that Cisse guy http://www.uoflcards.com/profiles/cisse.html It says he whooped Tyson Chandler and Eddie Curry when they were all highschoolers. Not bad for a 6'6 guy going toe to toe with a 7'1 footer and 6'10 dude.
Cisse just got some bad luck with his knee injury and bad advice from his agent. Hopefully, he's worked on his game enough to be back where he was before along with a few new skills. He can't replace the Custodian though, but if he makes the team, it'd be a nice story.
Here's an excellent article on Cisse's journey up to 2003. To paraphrase: Cisse is an incredible athlete with an tremendous work ethic, but he's got a very low basketball IQ and was rushed back from a torn ACL well before he was ready. The good news is that it looks like he's regained all of his explosiveness, the bad news is that his basketball knowledge is still pretty low. http://www.adirondackwildcats.com/news/030504poststar.htm I feel bad for the guy, I hope he makes it somewhere. Actually, I think he'd be a nice project for Montgomery. I don't recall Montgomery ever taking on projects like him, but if I were him, I'd give him a spot on the IR and see what happens.
Too Bad About Custodian,i'm not suprised that he's gone, but i'm wondering how you Warrior fans see year after year that all the good players go elsewhere.how do you deal with all of this?..i can imangine it gets frustrating by the year??
39 million? That's insane. That's only 11 million less than Ginobili. There was a period the league figured out Cardinal and he struggled big time. I love his hustle but that contract is way more ridiculous than Foyle.
<div class="quote_poster">Quoting MR_SAC_KING:</div><div class="quote_post">Too Bad About Custodian,i'm not suprised that he's gone, but i'm wondering how you Warrior fans see year after year that all the good players go elsewhere.how do you deal with all of this?..i can imangine it gets frustrating by the year??</div> Absolutely not. Cardinal was found money last year and filled in when the Warriors had a lot of injuries. He played about as well as could be expected and he got a huge contract out of it. Would I have liked to have him back? Sure. Would I have paid the full MLE over six years for him? Absolutely not. The same can be said about Boykins. He was terrific while he was here, but he got more money from another team and left. Let's not kid ourselves, a team made up of guys like Boykins and Cardinal who are each making 4-7 mil a year is not going to go anywhere. The Warriors already have enough energy guys like them in Foyle and Speedy. They don't need to sacrafice their future cap flexibility (and a shot at a max deal free agent/trade) to keep two more energy guys. Besides, unless West already has a deal in place to trade some guys on his team, I question the need for Cardinal when they already have six guys playing sf/sg. Cardinal isn't a sg, the point is just that they already had Posey, Miller, Battier, Jones, Wells, and Emmett. With Swift and Gasol at pf, I don't see how their going to find minutes for all these guys. The logical answer is that West may already have a deal in place with the Warriors for Damp. I sure hope not though. I feel there are a couple of deals out there that are far better than Swift and Battier.

I think talentwise the deal is fair but I have a couple of concerns about the deal. Battier will take time away from Dunleavy and Pietrus. Pietrus needs the time to develop. Dunleavy just needs to ball with no distractions like Musselhead yanking him out. Battier won't get the minutes he's looking for, then next season he will leave. That leaves us with Stro. That guy is a sheister. Shows up one game then doesn't. Doesn't sound like it'll click.
